BMW has confirmed that it will be expanding its ‘i’ range with the introduction three new models – an open-top i8 Roadster, an extended range all-electric i3 and an all-new model called i NEXT.

In 2018, the i8 will get a drop-top sibling, called i8 Roadster, a version of which was revealed at the  Consumer Electronics Show (CES) held in January, as the BMW i Vision Future Interaction concept. No details have been confirmed but sources say it will closely reflect the i8 Roadster concept revealed in 2012, and the doorless version shown at CES.

Following the success of the i8 coupé, the i8 Roadster was an inevitable next step. Its engine and performance figures are sure to echo the coupé's, which uses a three-cylinder 1.5-litre petrol engine alongside the electric motor. It makes 357bhp, has a 0-100kph time of 4.4sec and a top speed of 250kph.

A new BMW i3 in both pure electric and range-extender forms have also been announced, with a revised design and battery capacity increased by 50 percent. The car is also expected to get better electronics and software to further boost its range.

The all-new 'i' model confirmed by BMW, called the i NEXT, is set to be launched in 2020.

Speaking at BMW’s annual accounts press conference, Harald Krüger, chairman of the board of management at BMW AG, described the new model as the “new spearhead of innovation and technology”.

“It will enable us to take BMW i to the next level,” said Kruger. It will cover all aspects relevant for future cars, including autonomous driving, digital connectivity and intelligent lightweight construction as well as the next generation of electro-mobility.”

The ‘i’ range has seen tremendous success, with the i8 becoming the largest-selling hybrid sportscar in the world in 2015. Aside from the ‘i’ range, BMW has also introduced hybrid technologies in its other models, with the most recent being a hybrid variant of the new 7-series, badged 740e iPerformance.

Dzire feels a bit firm at low speeds. It handles well. Performance overall is much better, it feels like a regular automatic car.

Simple yet functional design showing age. But interior quality is above average; Monochrome display looks dated in today’s colour touchscreen age.

Dzire’s well-bolstered front seats are very comfortable.

. Legroom in the back is decent, beige trim and seats give the cabin an airy feel.

Fiat-sourced engine makes 74bhp.

Telephony controls placed behind the wheel.

AMT gearbox smooth in operation.

Audio display functional but dated.

High loading lip is a bit inconvenient.

The Tata Zest has the ability to crush potholes but it rolls a fair bit. Performance is not as strong, it jerks and baulks at slow speeds.

Well crafted dashboard looks brilliant. Quality of materials used good too; Driving position is not so good with high-set seats and poor range of steering adjustment.

High-set front seats offer good visibility but are a bit too soft.

Rear seats are the comfiest here. Ingress and egress is a breeze.

The Zest uses an uprated 88.8bhp Fiat motor.

AMT gearbox jerky.

Knurled climate control knobs feel nice.

Touchscreen infotainment system has good acoustics.

Strut mounts intrude into the boot.
