Along with a performance sedan concept, Volkswagen also showcased a hot-hatch concept based on the new-gen Polo at Sao Paulo.
The styling inspiration for the GTS seems to be derived from the Polo GTI on sale internationally, with aggressive body kit complete with large alloy wheels, dual-tip exhaust, red accents inside and out and GTS badges on the grille, fenders, boot and steering. The cabin is similar as a top-end Polo, with the virtual cockpit digital instrument cluster and a prominent central touchscreen.
Mechanicals are shared with the Virtus GTS, which means it gets a 150hp, 1.4-litre TSI petrol motor that's paired with a six-speed automatic gearbox.
The Polo GTS concept previews a production Polo hot-hatch for the South American market as an alternative to the full-fat Polo GTI offered in the European markets.
Volkswagen introduced the new sixth-gen Polo in June last year, with the GTI model following a few months later. The new Polo is underpinned by the brand’s MQB A0 platform and features a greater amount of sophistication as compared to its predecessor.
In India, the MQB A0 platform will make its debut on the T-Cross SUV that'll be launched in 2020, following which it could underpin a made-for-India replacement for the ageing Polo.
