Toyota is expanding its sporty TRD range of cars by introducing the Camry TRD, which will make its international debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show scheduled to start from November 28. The Camry TRD will share the stage with a performance-oriented Avalon TRD sedan.
The Japanese brand released a teaser via Twitter, which shows aggressive wheels with low profile tyres and a body kit that includes red stripes at the bottom. Expect the go-faster Camry to also feature a revised (read stiffer) suspension setup, tweaks on the inside to reflect the sporty image and TRD badges inside and out.
While the most powerful Camry in the US market currently comes with a 305hp, 3.5-litre V6 engine, the TRD may get a slight bump in power from using a sport exhaust. Drive will be sent to the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Although Toyota is not expected to bring the Camry TRD to India, the eight-generation Camry (which is the model that the TRD version is based on) is headed here by mid-2019. Unlike markets abroad, the Camry for India is expected only with a petrol-electric powertrain that is made up of a 176hp, 2.5-litre petrol engine and a 118hp electric motor. Total system output is 208hp. The hybrid system is sends power to the front wheels via a 6-step CVT automatic that can be operated via paddleshifters.
Expect the new Camry to be priced at a Rs 1 lakh premium over the model currently on sale in India, which retails for Rs 37.22 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). It will rival the likes of the Skoda Superb, Honda Accord and Volkswagen Passat when it arrives.
