Porsche could equip its future all-electric offerings with simulated transmissions akin to that of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N. Dubbed ‘N e-shift’, Hyundai’s system imitates an 8-speed DCT by using simulated rev ranges where power is delivered similarly to that of a conventional engine, and the electric motor’s torque is modulated to mimic the jolt between gear shifts. The N Active Sound+ system further improves the sensory experience by pumping an artificial engine note into the cabin via a gamut of speakers.
According to Andreas Preuninger – the head of Porsche’s GT division – a gearbox setup like such can enhance the "fun" of driving an EV.

Ioniq 5 N delivers a "very impressive" level of realism, per Preuninger
Speaking to our sister publication, Autocar UK, Preuninger waxed lyrical about the Ioniq 5 N, stating that when he drove it, the 650hp EV’s simulated gearbox provided a "very impressive" level of realism. This was Preuninger’s "biggest takeaway" from the Ioniq 5 N, and one that could affect the engineering direction of future Porsche EVs.
"We [Porsche GT] are automotive nerds, and discussions about how to improve driving engagement are always happening. Discussions are often intense as everybody’s got an opinion, but that only provokes innovation," remarked Preuninger.
A simulated gearbox could make for an even more engaging Porsche EV
Preuninger said that the Ioniq 5 N’s unique engine simulation and the sensation it provides, along with its natural-feeling controls, were key to a performance EV’s success. He teased that a similar system paired with Porsche’s renowned steering and brake pedal feel could make for a highly engaging performance EV.
Among Porsche's most-awaited launches are the next-gen 718 Boxster and Cayman, both of which are expected to be offered in EV and petrol guises (the latter may not be available initially). Given Preuninger's comments, the Boxster and Cayman EVs would be prime candidates for a simulated gearbox, but only time will tell whether they'll be equipped with the system.
The 2027-bound BMW M3 EV is also confirmed to use a simulated gearbox and artificial engine sounds.
