The last few weeks have seen fuel prices rising by a significant margin day after day. The prices for petrol has now crossed the Rs 90-mark in Mumbai, retailing at Rs 90.08 for a litre, while diesel is edging closer to the Rs 80-mark, and currently sells at Rs 78.58 per litre.

Prices for petrol and diesel in Delhi have now reached Rs 82.72 and Rs 74.02, respectively. A few state governments have reduced excise duties on fuel, such as West Bengal (a Rs 1 reduction) and Karnataka (by Rs 2), which is meant to help citizens.

Government officials have claimed that the cause of the hike in fuel prices is the increase in cost of international crude and the falling value of the Rupee.
