A year after Ford announced the return of its iconic Bronco SUV, the carmaker has now confirmed that it will be introduced in the next two years. The launch is part of Ford’s plan to replace 75 percent of its model range by 2020.

Ford teased the new SUV at an event held at its headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan. The Bronco reportedly shares its underpinnings with the new Endeavour (Everest in other Asian markets) and the recently revealed Ford Ranger pickup. Incidentally, the Endeavour facelift is headed to India, sometime this year.

At the 2017 Detroit motor show, Ford described the Bronco as a "no compromise mid-size 4x4”. It is safe to expect the Bronco to share the Ranger’s 2.3-litre EcoBoost turbo-petrol motor sending power to all four wheels. With Ford’s renewed focus on hybrids, a petrol-electric powertrain is also expected at a later date.

The event also saw Ford tease a new smaller SUV, which will sit below the Bronco in the brand’s American line-up. The model doesn’t have a name yet, and it isn’t clear if it will feature a monocoque chassis (making it more of a crossover) or a body-on-frame architecture (more like an off-roader). The SUV is expected to be a potential rival to the Jeep Compass.

Ford has revived the Bronco name 22 years after the model was discontinued in 1996 – 30 years after its launch in 1966.
