The Range Rover Velar, whose prices were announced last week, will be the first product in India to feature Jaguar Land Rover’s new 2.0-litre Ingenium turbo-petrol engine. You can expect this engine to find its way onto other JLR products in the near future, as well. JLR has confirmed to Autocar India that it will roll out its new 2.0-litre Ingenium petrol engine across its India model line-up.
At present, the Jaguar XE, XF and XJ, the Land Rover Discovery Sport and the Range Rover Evoque are offered in India with 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine options. However, these petrol engines are quite old and are actually from the era when Jaguar and Land Rover were owned by Ford. The new four-cylinder, 2.0-litre engines, however, have been developed wholly by JLR and are part of its modular Ingenium engine family. The all-aluminum engines make use of an electro-hydraulic valvetrain and feature an integrated exhaust manifold. JLR claims the new petrol engines deliver up to 25 percent more power than the engines they replace, while consuming up to 15 percent less fuel. There are three versions of the 2.0-litre Ingenium petrol engine – 200hp (from a single-scroll turbo), 250hp and 300hp using a twin-scroll turbo.
JLR India has not shared a timeline for the engine updates in India but we expect the 200hp and 250hp Ingenium units to replace the current engines on the Jaguar XE/XF 20t and 25t models soon. The 250hp Ingenium will also take the place of the existing 240hp engine on the Land Rover Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque, in the months to come. The 250hp version of the new 2.0 petrol engine is also expected to be offered on the Jaguar F-Pace, in due time. Oddly, the Jaguar XJ has been left out from the engine update. There is also scope for the 300hp Ingenium petrol engine to make it to India on the Jaguar F-Type. The new ‘base’ F-type has been pitched against the four-cylinder Porsche 718 Boxster/ Cayman, abroad – and we may just see the model make it to India, as well.
As we had reported earlier, Jaguar Land Rover is one of the manufacturers betting big on petrol cars in India. Interestingly enough, the petrol version of the Velar has seen greater interest than the norm, in India’s luxury SUV class. Velar deliveries in India are to start on January 20, 2018.
