The Hyundai Santro was officially launched on September 23 at an ex-showroom, pan-India price of Rs 3.89 lakh. The tall-boy hatchback gets a 1.1-litre petrol engine that produces 69hp on petrol and 59hp when fuelled by CNG. The petrol-powered variants come with 5-speed manual and, for the first time on a Hyundai, a 5-speed AMT option. The CNG unit meanwhile is paired to the 5-speed manual only.

The Santro AMT is available only on the mid-spec Magna and Sportz variants. The top-spec Asta trim does not get this option in a bid to keep prices of the hatchback in check. In comparison, the Santro’s rivals - the Tata Tiago and Maruti Suzuki’s WagonR and Celerio - are all available with an AMT gearbox in their respective top-spec variants.

The Santro AMT starts at Rs 5.18 lakh for the Magna trim, which is pricier when compared with its rivals. The Tata Tiago AMT starts at Rs 5.04 lakh while the Marutis are cheaper still, with the WagonR AMT starting at Rs 4.88 lakh and the Celerio AMT starting at Rs 4.97 lakh.
