Hyundai has filed a trademark for the Ioniq P nameplate in India. We had reported that the brand’s upcoming compact electric SUV is likely to use this name. The EV codenamed HE1i was referred to as the Ioniq P by Hyundai’s management during a Q3 2026 analyst call.

As of writing this article, the Ioniq P trademark is under review. Neither Hyundai nor the official government trademark website has confirmed the Ioniq P name yet. Notably, this marks a deviation from Hyundai’s numeric naming convention (for instance, 3, 5, 6, 9) for the globally recognised Ioniq nameplate.

In April 2026, Hyundai unveiled the Venus concept, which previewed the Ioniq V and established that China-exclusive Ioniq models will be named after planets. It remains to be seen whether this naming convention will extend to India, where Hyundai currently offers the premium Ioniq 5. The Ioniq P, if introduced, will bring the brand’s Ioniq nameplate to the country’s mass market.

Hyundai Ioniq P: Everything we know so far

Positioned below the Creta Electric, the Ioniq P is set to become Hyundai’s most affordable electric offering in India. Unlike its sister brand Kia, which launched an electric derivative of the Syros, Hyundai’s compact EV is a ground-up, standalone model rather than an EV adaptation of the Venue. It will compete with rivals such as the Tata Nexon EV, Mahindra XUV 3XO EV and Kia Syros EV.

The Ioniq P is expected to sit on the global E-GMP (K) platform, which underpins the Inster EV, and will be available in both standard and long-range variants. While initial production batches will rely on imported battery cells, Hyundai will later move to locally manufactured units supplied by Exide. The brand has confirmed a ‘next-generation infotainment system’ (likely the new Pleos Connect interface) alongside ‘Level 2 assisted driving technology’. The EV has been spied several times abroad and on our roads with a boxy, upright stance, LED lighting setups and dual-tone alloy wheels.

With its made-for-India mass-market electric vehicle, Hyundai is aiming to lift its EV sales share closer to the industry average in FY28. India’s EV sales have risen nearly 90 percent so far in FY27, and the upcoming Ioniq P could help the Korean brand increase the contribution of EVs in its sales mix.
