BMW will begin deliveries of the 6-series GT in India from March 2018 and has officially kicked-off local assembly operations for the luxury sedan at its plant in Chennai. The model has a localisation level of 50 percent.
The 6-series GT joins seven other models, namely the 3-series, 3-series Gran Turismo, the 5-series, the 7- series, the X1, the X3 and the X5, which are assembled at the same facility.
The 6-series GT is essentially a replacement for the 5-series GT and, in India, is being pitched as a -for-like rival to the long-wheelbase Mercedes-Benz E-class. The 6 GT sits on a longer wheelbase than the 5-series sedan, and slots in between the 5-series and 7-series in terms of size.
The 6-series GT was launched at Auto Expo 2018 at Rs 58.9 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Initially, the car will be available only in the 630i guise, which is powered by a 258hp, 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged petrol motor mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. A diesel-powered 6 GT will be launched later in the year.
