Aside from revised styling, the 2018 Mercedes-Benz C-Class update also brought in a new powertrain for the C200, a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system. The said mild-hybrid powertrain has been dropped for the 2020 C200 and has been replaced a more powerful 2.0-litre turbocharged unit. Prices for the new C200 petrol now start at Rs 40.90 lakh and range up to Rs 46.54 lakh (ex-showroom).

While the outgoing C200's 1.5 engine made 184hp (the electric system providing an additional 14hp/160Nm boost) the new 2.0-litre mill makes a higher 204hp. A 9-speed automatic gearbox continues to be offered as standard. Mercedes claims an identical 7.7sec 0-100kph time for the updated C-class.

As before, the C200 petrol is available in a choice of two trim levels – the entry-level Prime and the mid-spec Progressive. Standard equipment includes 64-colour ambient lighting, the COMAND infotainment system with a 10.25-inch display, satellite navigation, LED headlamps, a powered rear sunblind and powered front seats. The Progressive adds in tech such as a wireless phone charger, a digital instrument cluster, active parking assist, driver-seat memory and a Midline sound system.

The company’s embedded-SIM based Mercedes Me connected car technology is available as standard across the C-class range. The system offers a variety of location-based and remote vehicle monitoring functions.

The C-class currently only rivals the BMW 3 Series in the Indian market. Audi and Volvo are set to re-enter the segment with the launch the updated A4 and new S60 later in the year.
