Datsun has launched the Redigo AMT in two trims – T (O), priced at Rs 3.81 lakh and S, priced at Rs 3.96 lakh (all prices ex-showroom, Delhi). This represents an increase of about Rs 21,000 and Rs 23,000 over their respective manual counterparts.
The highlight is the five-speed AMT gearbox, which is mated to a 999cc, three-cylinder, petrol engine that produces 68hp at 5,500rpm and 91Nm of peak torque at 4,250rpm. The engine is the same as the 1.0-litre manual variant. The 800cc Redigo does not get the AMT option.
Like other AMT-equipped cars on the market, the Redigo’s transmission can be used in a sequential-like manual mode as well. Unlike the Kwid AMT, which shares its underpinnings and engines with the Redigo, the AMT on Datsun’s budget hatch also features a creep function, called the ‘Rush Hour’ mode, which is meant to make commute in urban environments a bit easier.
There aren’t any visual changes to help differentiate the AMT Redigo from its manual sibling, both inside and out, not even a badge.
In terms of kit, Datsun now offers an audio system with Bluetooth connectivity that enables hands-free calling and audio streaming. This new system will also be available with T (O) and S trims on the standard 0.8-litre and 1.0-litre Redigo. Other equipment offered on these trims includes an airbag, central locking, remote keys and front power windows.
The Redigo AMT faces off against the likes of the Renault Kwid AMT (Rs 3.83-4.58 lakh) and Maruti Celerio AMT (Rs 4.49-5.18 lakh). At this price point, the automatic Redigo even undercuts its Renault stable-mate.
