Having released a not-so-discreet teaser only a few days ago, Kawasaki has launched the Vulcan S in India priced at Rs 5.44 lakh (ex-showroom). A 649cc, parallel-twin motor powers Kawasaki’s maiden cruiser in India (if you excuse the erstwhile Eliminator) and it promises to be more than just a Ninja 650 in cruiser guise.

The Vulcan S is a fairly beefy and proportionate-looking cruiser and will only be available in one shade – matte black (Flat Ebony in Kawasaki speak). It features a tall handlebar, a digi-analogue instrument pod, five-spoke alloy wheels and a plush split-seat set-up. Kawasaki has launched the ABS version of the Vulcan S, and it’s shod with a 120/70 R18 tyre up-front and a 160/60 R17 at the rear.

Housed within its perimeter frame is a 649cc, eight-valve, DOHC, fuel-injected motor that produces 61hp at 7,500rpm and 63Nm at 6,600rpm, and is mated to a six-speed transmission. The Vulcan S weights 235kg (kerb), but thanks to its low 705mm seat height and 130mm ground clearance, should be fairly easy to ride once you break the ice. It also features a 41mm telescopic fork and a preload-adjustable off-set monoshock.

Braking duties have been assigned to a dual-piston 300mm disc brake up front and a single-piston, 250mm disc at the rear (ABS, as mentioned above, is standard). Its 14-litre fuel tank will also give it a decent range on the highway, which is where the Vulcan S belongs.

Bookings have now opened for the CKD-assembled Vulcan S, which takes on the Harley-Davidson Street 750 (and Street Rod).

A noteworthy feature on the Vulcan S is the ERGO-FIT adjustability, available in three configurations – extended reach (for riders 6’1” tall and over), mid-reach (5’7” to 6’0”) and reduced reach (5’6” and under). Internationally, buyers are allowed to pick one of the three (mid-reach is the stock setting) at the time of purchase for no additional cost. This package lets you choose the seat, handlebar and foot peg configuration as per your preference. Interestingly, Kawasaki India’s website states the alternative gearshift linkage rods, necessary for when you change the foot peg position, will be sold separately.
