BMW has just launched all three variants of the S1000RR in India. The Standard model is priced at Rs 18.50 lakh, while the Pro and Pro M Sport are priced at Rs 20.95 lakh and Rs 22.95 lakh, respectively (all prices, ex-showroom, India). Deliveries, meanwhile, are set to begin by August 2019.

The engine on the supersport continues to be a 999cc, in-line four, but it has gone through a few changes. Its international-spec unit produces 207hp at 13,500rpm and 113Nm of torque at 11,000rpm – an increase of 8hp over the 2018 model, with torque remaining unchanged. The engine now uses BMW’s ShiftCam Technology, which allows variable valve timing (VVT). This tech promises to deliver more performance throughout the rev range. Transmission duties are handled by a 6-speed unit with an up-down quickshifter.

BMW has also updated the electronics package on the motorcycle. A six-axis IMU helps power the cornering ABS and Dynamic Traction Control (DTC). The standard bike gets four riding modes – Rain, Road, Dynamic and Race – while the Sport and M Package get additional Pro riding modes called RACE Pro 1, RACE Pro 2, RACE Pro 3. All of this can be toggled via a new 6.5-inch full-TFT display.

The 2019 model also uses Hayes brakes instead of the Brembos that it has used so far; and the Sachs-branded suspension has been discontinued in favour of a Marzocchi suspension, this time around.

Other upgrades to the motorcycle come in the form of a redesigned chassis comprising lighter components and a WSBK-inspired swingarm. As a result of the new, lighter engine and frame, the bike has a 197kg kerb weight – a significant 11kg lesser than the outgoing model. The top-spec M package brings that kerb weight figure down to 193.5kg.

The S1000RR faces competition from the likes of the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R (Rs 13.99 lakh), the Honda CBR1000RR (Rs 16.41-19.26 lakh) and the Suzuki GSX-R1000R (Rs 19.81 lakh) (all prices, ex-showroom, Delhi). It also competes against the Ducati Panigale V4 and the V4S, priced at Rs 22.70 lakh and Rs 26.5 lakh, respectively (both prices, ex-showroom, India).
