BMW Motorrad has unveiled the new R 1250 GS – the replacement model for the iconic outgoing R 1200 GS. The new adventure-tourer offering is an important product for the German brand, as the R 1200 GS is BMW’s highest-selling motorcycle, globally. The R 1200 GS made its debut back in 2004 and the last update the motor received was in 2013, with added of water-cooling.
The 2019 BMW R 1250 GS will be equipped with a larger 1,245cc boxer motor replacing the 1,170cc engine seen on its predecessor. As expected, power figures have gone up, with the motor now producing 136hp at 7,750rpm and 143Nm of torque at 6,250rpm; the older engine delivered 125hp and 125Nm of torque. The inclusion of VVT (Variable Valve Timing) tech – which BMW calls ‘ShiftCam’ technology – is another interesting addition to the powerplant.
The R 1250 GS is the first production BMW motorcycle to feature VVT technology and BMW claims that it results in more efficient combustion, an increased refinement and more power across the rev range – especially in lower rpms. Other additions include a new camshaft drive – which now employs a toothed chain instead of the previous roller chain – an optimised oil supply, twin-jet injection valves and a new exhaust system.
In terms of styling, there isn’t much difference between the new bike and its predecessor; however BMW has equipped the R 1250 GS with an LED headlamp, while the LED daytime riding light is an available option. Another noteworthy addition on the adventure-tourer is a 6.5-inch full-colour TFT screen. The 2019 BMW R 1250 GS also comes with Automatic Stability Control (ASC) and Hill-start Control as standard fitment. The optional ‘Riding Modes Pro’ features additional riding modes, Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), ABS Pro (cornering ABS), Hill-start Control Pro and Dynamic Brake Control (DBC). BMW also has updated its semi-active electronic suspension (dubbed by BMW as Electronic suspension Dynamic) with fully automatic load compensation.
The 2019 BMW R 1250 GS is likely to make its global debut either at the INTERMOT or at the EICMA motorcycle show later this year and could make its way to India by mid- or late-2019.
