Follow usThe recently rebranded Citroen C3 X now packs in more features and continues to be offered with two engine options: an 82hp, 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol with a 5-speed manual, and a 110hp, 1.2-litre turbo-petrol available with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque-converter automatic. We tested the range-topping turbo-automatic variant to see how close it comes to its claimed 18.3kpl fuel-efficiency figure.
The C3 X’s 110hp/205Nm 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine, paired with a 6-speed torque converter, delivered 8.46kpl in the city and 13.38kpl on the highway in our test. Its throttle calibration is noticeably aggressive, making the car feel eager and responsive – something enthusiasts will enjoy. However, this very trait also contributes to its lower real-world efficiency.
A quick disclaimer: although the turbo-automatic variant is equipped with an engine stop-start system, with the climate control working hard to maintain a cabin temperature of 22 degrees centigrade amid 35-40 degrees centigrade ambient conditions, the system rarely shuts the engine off during idling.
Before our real-world fuel efficiency tests, we fill our test cars’ tanks to the brim and maintain tyre pressures based on the manufacturer’s recommendation. These cars are driven in fixed city and highway loops in and around Navi Mumbai, and we maintain certain average speeds. Throughout the tests, there is only one person in each car, running the aircon and other electricals, such as the audio system, indicators and wipers, when required, just like a regular user would. Periodic driver swaps further neutralise variations in driver patterns. At the end of each cycle, we calculate efficiency by filling the tanks to full again.
