I am planning to buy a 7-seater SUV with a budget of ₹20 to 24 lakh and am confused between the XEV 9S and the Safari petrol.

The XEV 9S is an electric car, while the Safari petrol is an ICE vehicle, and the two serve very different needs and requirements.
The Mahindra XEV 9S has a strong electric powertrain that delivers an ultra smooth driving experience with very low running costs. It is easier to drive than the Safari and works better as a city vehicle. However, for long trips involving distances of over 400 km, you would need to rely on public charging, which isn’t always convenient.
The Tata Safari petrol is also smooth to drive, but it is costlier to run and maintain. That said, it is more practical, offers much better third row seating, and gives you the flexibility of refuelling anywhere, making it the more stress free option for long journeys.

Asking on behalf of a colleague. He plans to buy an EV for regular use, which includes weekly office work (3-4 days), weekend trips with his small family, all within the Bangalore city area. He has booked the Mahindra XEV 9S. Should we wait for the launch of Sierra EV, as it is a bit smaller in size, which may be useful for his city usage? Also, since the Sierra petrol and diesel are still not visible on Bangalore roads as of mid-May 2026, despite having a huge hype during launch, would waiting for the Sierra EV be a wise decision or just a waste of time? Can the increasing petrol price lead to an increase in the cost of EVs? The Bangalore government has already removed the road tax discount on EVs.

The Mahindra XEV 9S is the more sensible choice rather than waiting for the Tata Sierra EV. With no firm launch date for the Sierra EV and uncertain delivery timelines, it makes more sense to opt for the XEV 9S, which is already on sale.Yes, the XEV 9S is a bit larger than the Tata; however, its light steering, tight turning radius, good visibility and driving aids make it surprisingly easy to drive and live with.Coming to the second part of your question, Karnataka has introduced new slabs for EV road tax from May 1, 2026, so on-road prices are higher than before, but still running costs remain much lower than petrol. Since your colleague is buying the car now, it will save him from any potential price hikes due to the higher battery import cost or any new taxes.

Hi everyone, I need some advice on which car to buy in the Rs. 20 lakh budget range. My driving will be around 40% city and 60% highway. The usage will not be very high with mostly regular city drives and occasional long highway trips. I am currently confused between Honda Elevate and Volkswagen Virtus 1.5 GT Sports DSG. I am looking for something comfortable, reliable, fun to drive, and suitable for long-term ownership. Should I go with one of these two, or are there any other good options in this price range? I would really appreciate your suggestions and ownership experiences.

With a Rs. 20 lakh budget and your usage pattern, the Volkswagen Virtus GT 1.5 DSG automatic suits you better. The strong 1.5 turbo engine pulls cleanly for quick overtakes which makes highway drives fun. It stays steady at speed, and the comfy front seats as well as spacious boot work well for long trips. In the city, the automatic gearbox helps make driving in traffic easy and the car does not feel big to place or park either. Two things to note. The dual‑clutch automatic doesn't feel as smooth in slow speed traffic as a torque‑converter or a CVT. Also, the rear seat is not as spacious as the Elevate, so the Virtus is best for four adults. If long-term peace of mind is your priority over fun-to-drive, the Honda Elevate automatic is the safer pick. It is easy to drive in town, rides well on bad roads, and Honda ownership is simple, but the engine feels more sedate in comparison.
