I am planning to upgrade my car, which is now 10 years old. My daily travel is within the city, with a couple of long highway drives. My budget is around ₹15 lakh. Kindly recommend a suitable car. I have shortlisted the XUV700, Seltos, and Sierra. Your expert opinion would be appreciated.

The Mahindra XUV700 has recently been replaced by its facelift, the XUV 7XO. However, while it is an excellent SUV, in your budget of Rs 15 lakh, you will only get a base model. Similarly, in the lower segment, you will be limited to low or mid-range models of the Kia Seltos and Tata Sierra. However, if you are okay with that, both are excellent SUVs.

The Tata Sierra excels in space and comfort, while the Kia Seltos is the better all-rounder, with punchier engines and more features. For your usage, we recommend the turbo-petrol automatic variant of either car, as it offers a good blend of price, performance, and refinement between city and highway use.

I currently own a first-generation Toyota Innova diesel (7-seater) that I bought in 2008. It has covered 2.75 lakh km. Even today, I am inclined towards the Innova HyCross because of Toyota's reliability and long-term ownership experience. I am looking for a spacious family vehicle that offers comfort, good ride and handling, reliability, and is enjoyable to drive. My annual running is approximately 9,500 km, with 70% city use in Mumbai and 30% highway use, mainly on the Mumbai-Satara route. My budget is Rs 26 lakh, and the Hycross Hybrid is beyond that. I have considered the HyCross GX(O) petrol, but I am concerned about its fuel efficiency in city conditions. Should I still consider it? If not, what other options would suit my requirements? I am open to both SUVs and MPVs, although I am not inclined towards the Ertiga, XL6, or Kia Carens, as they do not feel like significant upgrades.

Yes, buy the Innova HyCross GXO non-hybrid. Your 70% Mumbai use and only 9,500 km a year means the hybrid’s big price jump will take ages to recover, while the GXO still gives you the Innova space, comfort and Toyota’s easy long-term ownership. In real Mumbai traffic, expect roughly 8-10 kpl and about 12-14 kpl on the Mumbai-Satara run. The automatic is smooth in the city, the ride is calm, and the third row is far better than any SUV at this price.One honest catch: the 2.0 petrol is relaxed, not exciting, and the GXO trim is light on features. If you want sharper performance and more kit, you will need to stretch, which you said you do not want to.If you still want options, look at the Hyundai Alcazar 1.5 turbo petrol. It is nicer to drive in the city and decently efficient, but it is a size smaller, and the third row is tight.The Mahindra XUV 7XO petrol is quick and feature-rich, yet its third row and boot cannot match the Innova, and long-term peace of mind still tilts toward Toyota. Diesel versions of these two could also be an option, but with your city-heavy running, you will need to make extra trips on the highway to keep the DPF healthy.

I am a bit confused between the Kia Seltos HTX 1.5L Petrol Manual and the Renault Duster Iconic 1.3L Turbo Petrol Manual. Considering my daily commute of around 40 km (to and fro), the need for good fuel efficiency, and regular weekend outings with my family, which one would offer better value for money within a budget of Rs. 20 lakh?

With a 40km daily commute, fuel efficiency, refinement and ease of ownership become more important than outright performance. The naturally aspirated 1.5-litre petrol in the Kia Seltos is smoother in stop-start traffic, easier to drive and should return better real-world fuel economy than the Duster's 1.3-litre turbo-petrol.The Renault Duster's strengths lie elsewhere. It feels tougher, rides better on poor roads and has a more robust SUV character. The 1.3 turbo-petrol also delivers noticeably stronger mid-range performance, making it the more enjoyable car on highways. However, turbo-petrol engines generally reward a lighter right foot and tend to consume more fuel when driven enthusiastically.For weekend family trips, the Seltos also scores highly with its spacious cabin, feature-rich interior and overall refinement. The HTX trim offers a strong equipment list without stretching the budget, and the Seltos remains one of the most rounded family SUVs in the segment.

I currently own a Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, which is either 5-seater or a 7-seater with a large boot space. I am planning to upgrade and am currently confused between the Toyota Innova HyCross and the Mahindra XUV 7XO. My annual running is around 35,000-40,000 km. Space and seating capacity are important requirements for my daily work. Based on these needs, which of these two vehicles would you recommend? Alternatively, is there any other option that might suit my requirements better?

Go for the Toyota Innova HyCross, because space is your maximum priority, and it has the most usable third row and the best boot flexibility here. The HyCross’ cabin is wider, the floor is flatter, and access to the last row is easier, so adults actually fit. Fold the third row and you get a big, clean load bay for daily work. The hybrid is smooth and quiet in traffic and will save you fuel in city use, as well as out on the highway.Pick the Mahindra XUV 7XO only if you want diesel punch, the SUV body style and road presence, and the latest tech. Its third row and boot are smaller and fuel use is higher, so is ultimately not as practical a 7-seater as the Hycross. The only thing you have to bear in mind is the Innova Hycross hybrid price at the top end will be higher than the XUV 7XO. That aside, however, the Toyota car remains the better option for you.

You should go for the Mahindra XEV 9S. It's a proper three-row EV, and it fits your use case perfectly. With home solar charging, your running costs are very low, and the smooth, quiet drive is just right for city runs as a 4-seater. When you do need six or seven seats, the third row is reasonably spacious, and for your 500 km trip every couple of months, you’ll need just one quick top-up at a highway charger.Do note that with all three rows up, boot space is tight, so your highway trips will require some planning.Alternatively, consider the Kia Carens Clavis EV. It isn't as feature-rich and doesn't have as much range as the XEV 9S, but its third row is more comfortable for adults.

I am getting the Hyundai i20 Sportz IVT for Rs. 9.5 lakh and the Honda Amaze VX CVT for Rs. 10.5 lakh. Which one should I buy?

Pick the Hyundai i20 Sportz IVT. Besides being Rs 1 lakh more affordable, the i20 feels like a more refined, smooth and polished car in comparison. The cabin feels a touch nicer with better quality of materials and fit-finish, and the rear seat is wider if you occasionally seat three.If you often do airport runs or road trips with family, the Amaze CVT VX could makes sense on account of its huge boot. But overall, the i20 IVT is the better pick.

I want to buy a car under Rs 12 lakh. It should be a petrol automatic and will be my first car. I need good ground clearance, a good engine and gearbox combination for 70% city and 30% highway use, and my daily running is around 30 km in Bengaluru traffic. Comfort, space, decent fuel efficiency, ease of driving, and long-term ownership are important to me. I do not want a Fronx, Baleno, i20, Exter, Punch, or Nexon. Please suggest a value-for-money option. Thank you.

Given your exclusions, the Skoda Kylaq automatic would be our first recommendation. Specifically, the Signature automatic is if you can stretch slightly. The 1.0 TSI turbo petrol and torque converter automatic are a very good combination for Bangalore traffic. The gearbox is smooth, the engine has enough punch for highway overtakes, and the car feels more premium and substantial than most options in this price range. Ground clearance is good, it is easy to drive, and it has the solid feel that many first-time buyers appreciate.Another strong option is the Mahindra XUV 3XO MX2 Pro automatic. It has a wider rear seat, feels bigger inside and is one of the most spacious compact SUVs in the segment. The torque converter automatic is smooth, and it is comfortable for city use. The downside is that fuel efficiency is not that great, and the boot is on the smaller side.If you are willing to consider a sedan, the Honda Amaze CVT is also worth a look. The CVT is exceptionally smooth in traffic, reliability is excellent, and it is the kind of car you can comfortably keep for a decade. The only reason it is not our primary recommendation is that you specifically mentioned wanting good ground clearance.
