My father is considering purchasing his first car. The current options under consideration are the Tata Punch Adventure+ S and the Kia Sonet HTK Plus. The primary use will be city driving, with occasional outstation trips. Since this will be his first car, we are aiming for a reliable and feature-rich model. Could you also suggest other brands or models under ₹10 lakh that might be suitable?

Between the Tata Punch and the Kia Sonet variants you’ve shortlisted, the Kia Sonet would be the better choice. It offers a smoother four-cylinder engine, a more premium cabin, better rear seat space, and a larger boot. The feature list is nearly identical between the two. However, it’s worth noting that the Punch petrol has been tested by Global NCAP and earned a 5-star crash test rating, while the Sonet hasn’t been tested yet.
You could also consider the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, which provides even more rear seat space than both the Tata Punch and the Kia Sonet.

I want to purchase a car costing around 10L (1-2 up or down). City and highway trip ratio is 80-20. Fuel efficiency, safety, low maintenance and comfort are primary considerations. Can you please suggest any? I am also open to buying a used car.

Choose the updated Tata Punch Accomplished MT. For an around Rs 10 lakh budget and 80% city use, it blends five-star safety, a comfortable cabin, a cushy ride and easy ownership.Your city-heavy usage suits this Tata car’s compact footprint and light steering, making parking and tight turns easier. Its Bharat NCAP five-star safety rating adds confidence for safety-focused buyers. In our testing, the 1.2-litre petrol returned around 13kpl combined, which is decent for a vehicle of this kind. Its simple 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine (no turbo or direct injection) keeps maintenance straightforward. Ride quality is absorbent over potholes, and the 187mm ground clearance clears speed breakers easily, improving day-to-day comfort. The one trade-off is highway performance. The 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine feels modest for quick overtakes with five occupants on board, so you will need to plan manoeuvres and keep the engine in the power band. If you need a bit more performance, consider the turbo-petrol version, even if it means opting for a lower variant. On the test drive, check if the performance is adequate for your needs, and ensure the clutch and gearshift action are light enough for your city commutes.

My budget is around ₹13 lakh on-road. Can you please suggest a car with good mileage and a boot space of around 350 litres or more?

Go for the Maruti Suzuki Dzire ZXi+ MT. It stays well within your Rs 13 lakh budget, delivers a 24.79kpl ARAI efficiency, and offers a roomy 382‑litre boot. The Dzire also offers a comfortable and spacious cabin, and it has received a 5-star crash safety rating from Global NCAP and Bharat NCAP. You also get the peace of mind associated with Maruti ownership. The one thing you give up is the high ground clearance and elevated seating position you'd get in a compact SUV.If you want SUV-like clearance and a taller driving position, consider the Kia Sonet 1.2 HTK+(O) petrol instead. It has a claimed ARAI mileage of 18.83kpl, and its 385‑litre boot can fit in more cargo than you'd think.

I am looking for an automatic car. It will be driven mostly in Trivandrum city and will do a monthly long drive of 500km. Please suggest a good option between 10-12 lakh, on-road in Trivandrum.

Since most of your driving is in the city, a torque-converter automatic would be a good choice. With that in mind, there are several options in your price range, but the Fronx and the XUV 3XO stand out.The Maruti Suzuki Fronx with the Boosterjet engine offers decent performance and is responsive at low speeds, thanks in part to the mild-hybrid system’s ISG motor, which also helps improve fuel efficiency. The 6-speed Aisin-sourced automatic is very smooth in operation and reliable. Cabin space and overall comfort are good, and highway stability will feel reassuring on your longer trips.Similarly, the Mahindra XUV 3XO with the 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine offers good performance and a smooth-shifting 6-speed automatic. It offers a spacious and plush cabin that can comfortably accommodate five passengers. The suspension is comfortable and has a robust feel. Before you decide, take a test drive of both cars.
