City use on rough roads with a hard cap of around Rs. 8 lakh points straight to the Tata Punch Pure MT as the best fit for you. It is a small, taller car with higher ground clearance than most small cars, so you will clear speed breakers and broken lanes without scraping. The ride is one of the best at this price; it softens potholes and uneven patches well. It is also easy to judge and park, so tight city spots are not a headache.
A couple of things to keep in mind for your use. The engine feels fine in stop-and-go traffic, but if you often drive on highways with four or five people on board, quick overtakes need some planning. Also, the lower trims are basic on features; if your on-road budget in your city allows, the next trim up adds useful everyday bits and is worth a look.
If you want an alternative in the same budget, check the Hyundai Exter. Like the Punch, it is a small car with good ground clearance, and Hyundai's service experience is known to be consistently good. Do note the base trims are simple, and in some cities, the on-road price may sit near your cap, so confirm local prices.

Hello, I am planning to purchase a sub-compact SUV and have shortlisted the Hyundai Venue Turbo DCT. I am concerned about the impact of the future rollout of higher ethanol blends on a turbo-petrol engine. I am wondering if I should consider an SUV with a naturally aspirated (NA) engine instead, and whether it would handle higher ethanol blends any better in the future.

As things stand today, both naturally aspirated and turbo petrol engines sold by major manufacturers are designed to be E20 compatible. There is no evidence to suggest that a modern turbo petrol engine will suddenly become unsuitable while an E20-compliant naturally aspirated engine remains unaffected. If India eventually moves to much higher blends, manufacturers will likely need to make hardware and calibration changes across the board, regardless of whether the engine is turbocharged or naturally aspirated.In fact, if you are choosing between a Venue Turbo DCT and an equivalent naturally aspirated rival, we would make the decision based on the way the car drives rather than on future fuel policy. The 1.0 turbo petrol offers better performance and flexibility than most naturally aspirated engines in the segment, especially on highways and during overtakes.So our advice would be simple: buy the Venue Turbo DCT if it suits your needs today. We do not see the turbocharged engine as carrying any meaningful additional risk from potential future ethanol-blend increases compared to a modern naturally aspirated petrol engine.

I want to buy a car under Rs 12 lakh. It should be a petrol automatic and will be my first car. I need good ground clearance, a good engine and gearbox combination for 70% city and 30% highway use, and my daily running is around 30 km in Bengaluru traffic. Comfort, space, decent fuel efficiency, ease of driving, and long-term ownership are important to me. I do not want a Fronx, Baleno, i20, Exter, Punch, or Nexon. Given your exclusions, the Skoda Kylaq automatic would be our first recommendation. Specifically, the Signature automatic is if you can stretch slightly. The 1.0 TSI turbo petrol and torque converter automatic are a very good combination for Bangalore traffic. The gearbox is smooth, the engine has enough punch for highway overtakes, and the car feels more premium and substantial than most options in this price range. Ground clearance is good, it is easy to drive, and it has the solid feel that many first-time buyers appreciate.Another strong option is the Mahindra XUV 3XO MX2 Pro automatic. It has a wider rear seat, feels bigger inside and is one of the most spacious compact SUVs in the segment. The torque converter automatic is smooth, and it is comfortable for city use. The downside is that fuel efficiency is not that great, and the boot is on the smaller side.If you are willing to consider a sedan, the Honda Amaze CVT is also worth a look. The CVT is exceptionally smooth in traffic, reliability is excellent, and it is the kind of car you can comfortably keep for a decade. The only reason it is not our primary recommendation is that you specifically mentioned wanting good ground clearance.
