I'm having a Maruti Suzuki Fronx Delta Plus 1.2 MT, which I bought in June 2024 and have driven around 29,000 km. I was a first-time buyer, so I received a lot of advice from everyone, which left me confused. Eventually, I chose Maruti because of its low maintenance and fuel efficiency. However, I'm now bored with its performance as well as its mileage. I'm getting only 16-17 kpl on the highways, whereas I used to get over 20 kpl initially. My driving is 60% highway and 40% city. Is it worth upgrading to a new car, or when would be the right time to upgrade?

With 29,000 km on your Maruti Suzuki Fronx in just over a year, you are clearly a high-usage driver, and your 60% highway usage is the key factor here. The 1.2 petrol is a reliable and efficient engine, but it is not particularly exciting on the highway, and that is likely why you are feeling bored with this Maruti Suzuki car.

The bigger question is whether it is worth upgrading now. Financially, the car is still relatively new, and you will take a depreciation hit if you sell it this early. However, given your usage pattern, it may actually make sense to upgrade sooner rather than later. A diesel SUV like the Mahindra XUV 3XO or the Tata Nexon would be a much better fit for your driving style, offering stronger performance on the highway and better fuel efficiency at higher speeds. Alternatively, if you want to stick with petrol, something like the Skoda Kylaq 1.0 TSI would offer a much more engaging driving experience without sacrificing too much on efficiency.

Ultimately, the decision comes down to how much the current car is bothering you. If you are genuinely unhappy with the performance and fuel efficiency, it is better to upgrade now rather than wait another year or two and continue to be dissatisfied with the car. If you can live with it for another year or two, you will get more value out of the car before upgrading.

@lokeshkarunamoorthy Go for XUV 3XO diesel because you drive 60% in city and get a good mileage figure too. A solid build 5 star car with a punchy diesel engine would quench your thirst for performace and fun to drive factor maintaing a good mileage. If you wanted a petrol and pure driving pleasure with decent mileage( not as high as xuv diesel), I would recommend Skoda Kylaq. You would fall in love every time you drive it especially at corners

My new baleno fuel economy also dropped from 13 to 9kmpl in city .. I switched to speed petrol which is like less than 15% ethanol with higher octane levels. My fuel economy has returned to what it used to be. Another suggestion is to use liquimoly injection cleaner, it worked brilliantly in my older etios which has done 170000kms improved mileage in city from 6 to 10 kmpl and highways from 13kmpl to 17kmpl..

@lokeshkarunamoorthy At 29k running, I wouldn't recommend upgrading yet. Instead, first get the car inspected for the drop in fuel efficiency, as 16-17 kpl on the highway is lower than expected for a Fronx 1.2 MT. If you are looking for stronger performance, I would suggest keeping the car for another 2-3 years and then upgrading, as you'll get better value from your current car and a more meaningful upgrade.

Hi Autocar Team, I am planning to buy my first car and am confused between the Mahindra XUV 3XO RevX A MT Petrol and the Maruti Suzuki Brezza ZXi+ Turbo MT Petrol. I feel the Brezza offers better value for money, more features, and is actually priced lower than the 3XO. At the same time, I understand that the Brezza offers better reliability, fuel efficiency, and long-term peace of mind. However, the 3XO feels more premium and, from what I have heard, offers a better ride quality. I plan to keep the car for 10 years or more, so long-term ownership is an important factor. Could you please suggest which of these two would be the better choice for my requirements?

Go for the Maruti Suzuki Brezza ZXi+ turbo MT petrol. For a first car with a 10+ year ownership plan, the Brezza works well. Maruti’s service network, proven reliability and lower long-term maintenance costs make it a stress-free ownership proposition. The Brezza’s turbo petrol engine is also well-suited to Indian conditions, offering good drivability and efficiency without being overly complex. The Mahindra XUV 3XO RevX A MT petrol does make sense too, but we would lean towards it more if a peppy and lively drive feel is what you are after. Overall, the ride and handling balance is better with the 3XO, which has a good mix of city comfort and high-speed stability. The Brezza, however, leans towards the city with a much more pliant ride at low speeds. Thus for you keeping in mind a long ownership period, we would lean towards the Brezza.

Brezza ZXI+ Petrol AT vs XUV 3XO AX5 Petrol AT. I’m super confused. I loved the peppy TCMPFI engine of the 3XO, but being in the Maruti family has made me used to reliability and smooth after-sales service. However, the higher taxes on the Brezza and the strong value-for-money proposition of the 3XO have left me stuck. Will the 3XO be as reliable as the Brezza for 8-10 years? I’m ignoring mileage for now, as the 3XO is already around Rs 2 lakh cheaper. My brain says Brezza, but my heart says 3XO.

Go with the Mahindra XUV 3XO AX5 Petrol AT. The Brezza ZXI+ Petrol AT is a very sensible choice, but the 3XO is simply the better value proposition here. The 1.2 turbo petrol engine is genuinely peppy, the torque converter automatic is smooth, and the car feels more premium and better equipped for the money. The Brezza’s new Boosterjet engine brings down the price and offers the turbo punch you want, but it isn't available with an automatic. As such, the Maruti Suzuki Brezza 1.5 NA AT doesn't offer the same value for money as the 3XO.On reliability, the XUV 3XO is a proven product and Mahindra’s service network is strong. It may not have Maruti’s legendary reputation, but it is not a car you should be worried about owning for 8-10 years. The Brezza is the safer, more predictable choice, but the 3XO is the smarter buy here.

Go for the Volkswagen Taigun 1.5 TSI Sport. Coming from a Polo and Vento automatic, you already appreciate Volkswagen’s driving DNA, and the Taigun 1.5 TSI is a natural progression. The engine is punchy, the DSG gearbox is quick and engaging, and the overall driving experience is far more involving than the Seltos. The Taigun also feels more compact and agile in the city, while still being comfortable on the highway. The Volkswagen Taigun mileage is 19.54 kpl for the 1.0 TSI AT, 19.98 kpl for the 1.0 TSI MT, and 18.85 kpl for the 1.5 TSI DCT.The Kia Seltos diesel X-Line is a strong all-rounder with better space, a more premium cabin and a more relaxed long-distance character, but it does not offer the same level of driver engagement. The diesel engine is efficient and torquey, but it lacks the excitement of the 1.5 TSI. Given your history with Volkswagen cars, the Taigun will simply feel more familiar and more enjoyable to drive every day. The Taigun price starts at Rs 11.00 lakh (ex-showroom).

For a car under 10 lakh budget and occasional use, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno makes sense. It is a genuinely spacious hatchback with a comfortable ride. It's easy to drive in the city and has a proven ownership record. The naturally aspirated petrol engine is smooth and reliable, and Maruti’s service network in Kolkata is excellent, which keeps long-term running costs low.For occasional use, you want a car that is easy to live with, dependable and does not demand much attention, and the Baleno fits that brief perfectly. I am looking to buy an electric car in the Rs. 20-30 lakh price range. My driving is mostly within the city, with an annual running of only 5,000-7,000 km. Would you recommend buying an EV now, or would it be better to wait for the newer models that are expected to launch over the next few months?

With 5,000-7,000 km a year and mostly city driving, you are the ideal EV buyer. The Mahindra XEV 9S in its top-spec Pack Three guise will comfortably fit in your budget. With a 79kWh battery pack, you can easily expect a real-world range of around 480km in daily driving conditions. The 9S is also a full-size SUV with three rows, so practicality is excellent. There is a usable frunk as well, and the feature list is extensive with connected tech, panoramic sunroof, front and rear ventilated seats, drive modes, Level 2 ADAS and much more. Also, with 286hp, the 9S has plenty of performance for everyday needs. The overall package strikes a good balance and hence is our recommendation.
