I want to buy the Scorpio N, mostly the Z8L, given the luxury and ADAS. But I am confused about which one to get, petrol or diesel. YouTube is filled with reviews, and people say to get diesel if you have higher running. Now, my driving will be office commutes, maybe 20km round trips in cities like Bangalore, and of course, long trips like 800km round trips every two months or so, along with weekend getaways twice a month. Does diesel make sense? If it does, what is the general care for it if I don’t drive for a week or so? And why should I get petrol, if not diesel?

If you are after a Mahindra Scorpio N, we feel you should go for the diesel version. This is less to do with the outright difference in running costs, and more that Mahindra's 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine, in its latest avatar, is the more accomplished powertrain overall. The truth is, neither engine is very fuel-efficient as Mahindra prioritises performance over all else with its engines, and in everyday driving, the difference will be negligible.

In our real-world tests, Mahindra Scorpio N mileage averaged 8.65kpl for the petrol automatic and 10.15kpl for the diesel automatic. Thus, the difference in fuel economy will be felt more on your 800km round-trip journey or your weekend getaways, and for this, yes, the diesel is a better bet.

No, leaving it without driving for a week should not be an issue as long as it isn't done too often, but it's recommended to give it one brisk drive at least once a month to clean out the DPF, which should be taken care of during your regular outstation trips.

The advantage of the petrol would be stronger outright performance, but the diesel isn't far behind, and in fact, its more relaxed nature may be preferable. The two are even closely matched on refinement.

When is the SN face-lift expected ? I own an XUV500 D MT & looking for SN D AT as next car. Is it an upgrade ? Or the ladder frame has too much movement vs the monocoque XUV500? XUV700 test drive did not have the SUV feel, but a car like feel. SN TD felt like an SUV feel.

With just 2,000 km a year and mostly city use, the Hyundai Creta SX petrol automatic is the better fit. The Creta is easier to drive in traffic, has a smoother CVT automatic gearbox and is more compact, which makes it easier to park and manoeuvre in the city. Hyundai's service network is also excellent, and the car is known for its reliability and low running costs. The XUV 7XO is a larger, more powerful SUV, but is also more expensive and much larger than the Creta which makes it more cumbersome to drive in traffic. The Creta SX petrol automatic will give you a more relaxed and hassle-free ownership experience.

For your usage, the Skoda Kylaq is a good upgrade. Your 65 km daily expressway run means you need a car that is stable at speed and comfortable over long distances. The Kylaq delivers that very well. At your budget, you could get a lower-spec automatic, which would make it easy to drive in city traffic, which matters for your twice-a-month urban runs. The automatic gearbox is a torque converter, so its shifts are very smooth and it is very reliable too. The only possible downside is that fuel efficiency is not going to be very high, and given your high daily running, this is something that might bother you. If so, opt for the Maruti Suzuki Fronx 1.2L, which is also good at higher speeds and would be more fuel efficient. The auto box in this case is an AMT, which would not be as smooth, but this would only be a bit of a bother in city traffic and not on steady highway cruising.

The rear seat is wider, the cabin feels more spacious, and the boot is larger, which makes a difference on family trips.
