Hi, I want to buy an automatic car, but I'm confused about the transmission. Which transmission is best out of AMT, DCA, or TC? I have shortlisted either the Tata Nexon or the Mahindra 3XO. My budget is 13L.

Between the three, avoid the AMT, which is jerkier in its operation than the other two options listed. The Nexon's Turbo-petrol + DCA is a very smooth powertrain, but the XUV 3XO, with its turbo-petrol + torque converter combination, is the stronger performer.
Additionally, XUV's refinement, cabin space, and ride comfort are marginally better than the Nexon's. Hence, we'd recommend the Mahindra XUV 3XO.

I want to buy a new SUV around ₹20 lakhs as my primary car. I really love the shape of the Thar Roxx. I want a capable, punchy engine that gives a feeling of great pickup. Mileage is not an issue for me. Most driving will be in the city. Can you suggest an SUV and variant (diesel/petrol)?

Yes, the Mahindra Thar Roxx has an iconic shape that resembles the Jeep Wrangler and has a lot of appeal. If mileage is not an issue, then go for the 2-litre petrol automatic, which is smooth, responsive and has a good pick-up. You don’t need a 4x4 for the city, and hence the rear-wheel-drive MX3 variant will suit you best.

I am planning to buy my first car and have started driving classes. My budget is ₹10 lakh. I will mostly drive in the city and occasionally on the highway, and I have a family of three. Please suggest which car to buy.

The new Hyundai Venue is a good option to consider. It is an easy-to-drive SUV with good visibility, a light steering, and a buttery-smooth 5-speed manual gearbox and clutch. The 1.2-litre petrol engine is very refined and smooth, and has adequate performance for city use. You could also consider a Maruti Baleno or Toyota Glanza. These are very user-friendly hatchback options in that price range.

I am a 60-year-old retired senior citizen. I am looking for a car for long trips of 20-25 days at a time to visit India’s religious, cultural, and historical places with my wife. I plan to drive a maximum of 200-250 km in a day with two to three halts. Please suggest a car that requires less effort to drive, is safe, fuel-efficient, and low in maintenance within a low budget. I am used to driving a two-wheeler, and this will be my first four-wheeler.

We would recommend you look at the Maruti Suzuki Celerio. The Celerio will deliver well on the mileage and maintenance front, and it is also very easy to drive with a compact footprint, light controls and a good view outside. The car also secured a 3-star rating in the GNCAP crash tests, which is just about ok. If you'd like something better on this front, consider the Tata Tiago, which fares better with a 4-star rating. It offers a slightly better ride quality and stability at speed, but bear in mind the mileage will not be as good as the Maruti Celerio. Also, Tata dealers are not known to be very good with service.

I am a 4 feet 9 inches woman and need a car to travel to my office, which is 20 km from my home. The daily commute will be about 40 km. Please suggest a budget car within ₹6 lakh that is comfortable and adjustable for my height.

The Maruti Celerio would be a good option for you. It isn't a tall car, so getting in and out is easy, but despite that, the view outside is good. The top-spec car has height adjustment for the driver's seat, and we recommend that you sit inside this variant to see how it suits you. It would be slightly above your Rs 6 lakh budget, but with some year-end dealer offers, you could get it below that mark.
