The Maruti Suzuki Ignis is a good upgrade from the Alto 800. However, if you want a bit more space, the Maruti Suzuki Swift would be a better choice, though it’s slightly more expensive.

My wife has recently started learning to drive and is looking to buy her first car, which she will primarily use for daily office commuting (around 40-50 km per day). She prefers a petrol automatic car with a relatively high driver seating position. Since this will be her first car, I am inclined towards a Maruti Suzuki model, unless a Hyundai option makes a very strong case. We are currently considering the Maruti Suzuki Alto K10, Maruti Suzuki Celerio, and Maruti Suzuki Ignis (we are not considering the WagonR). Among these, the Celerio and Ignis seem like better options, but we are slightly concerned about the possibility of them being discontinued in the near future. Which of these cars would be the best choice for her needs?

The Maruti Suzuki Ignis is the best option for your wife. Its compact dimensions make it easy to manoeuvre, and the relatively high seating position gives a good view of the road, aiding confidence behind the wheel. A peppy engine and the convenience of AMT also help its case. The Ignis is a bit firm in its ride comfort, though. Maruti Suzuki has not announced plans to discontinue the Ignis, though the model has been around for a while. Even in the case of the model being discontinued, you will not have trouble with service support and parts availability for years to come.

The diesel’s stronger low‑end torque makes city overtakes and hill climbs easier, and for a diesel, it is refined, and it feels very relaxed for highway cruising too. Longer range between fills reduces weekly stops when you’re doing 300-400 km in just a few days. Also, with such regular running, the diesel’s DPF can complete regenerations reliably, keeping warnings at bay.The one thing you give up is the petrol’s quieter, smoother feel and lower upfront price; the diesel costs more and is a bit noisier at idle.If most trips are short stop‑start city runs, with few highways, consider the XUV7XO AX7 Petrol Automatic instead for smoother refinement and no DPF fuss.

We would recommend you look at the Maruti Suzuki Celerio. Refinement from the 1.0 litre engine is much better than you would expect from a three-cylinder engine, and minimal vibrations filter into the cabin. The overall performance is smooth and easy for normal everyday driving, and at low city speeds, it even feels a bit eager, and it is thus quite enjoyable to drive. In terms of safety, the car is well equipped with safety features like 6 airbags, anti-locking brakes (ABS) and electronic stability program (ESP). It also scored a three-star crash safety rating in the GNCAP test. You can get cars with a better crash rating, like the Tata Tiago, for instance, but you will not find the engine as smooth.
