Hi Team. I need your advice on whether the Thar Roxx would be suitable for my usage. I am currently driving a 2015 Hyundai i10 manual and am planning to change it. About 90% of my driving is within the city, with a monthly running of around 1,000 km. The car is mainly used for home-to-office commutes, weekend city trips, and once-a-month highway drives. Now that the Roxx Star Edition has been launched, I am interested in it. Please suggest whether it is suitable for me. If yes, should I choose petrol or diesel? I prefer an automatic, but that will exceed my budget. I have a budget constraint of around ₹17 lakh on-road with a BH number. Please suggest other suitable options if the Thar Roxx is not ideal.

The Mahindra Thar Roxx is the most refined, sophisticated, and easy-to-drive ladder-frame SUV Mahindra has made yet, and its intention is to rival more conventional midsize SUVs like the Hyundai Creta.
However, some shortcomings of a ladder-frame SUV still remain. It is a large SUV whose boxy dimensions aren't ideal for the city, and its ride comfort is not as good as that of a conventional midsize SUV with a lot of movement inside the cabin. And its engines - both petrol and diesel - while powerful and relatively smooth, return very poor mileage, which will be a huge contrast after your 2015 Hyundai i10 manual. Still, it is a very appealing SUV, especially on the looks front, and it offers all the modern features you could want too, so if you are willing to put up with these shortcomings, you can check it out.
Do note, however, that the Roxx Star Edition will be outside your budget of Rs 17 lakh, even for the manual version. Otherwise, we would recommend waiting for the new Renault Duster to be launched in March 2026; it will offer similar tough appeal at a possibly more affordable price.

The Tata Sierra is the most practical option for you. It has a spacious cabin, a comfortable ride, and a punchy petrol engine. What helps its case in the city, especially compared to the other two, is the compact dimensions that make it easy to park and manage in traffic. The turbo-petrol engine with the DCT would be our recommendation as the naturally aspirated version lacks performance. The automatic gearbox is smooth, the engine is refined, and the ride comfort is excellent. It is also fresh on the inside with the latest tech and features.However, if you have a big family and a third row is a must, the Mahindra XUV 7XO is a good option. It has a strong and refined petrol engine, and it also has a comfy ride. But you will have to manage its size in the city, and it will not be as easy as the Sierra.The Mahindra Thar Roxx is not as comfortable as the Tata Sierra or the XUV 7XO. It has a lot of character in its design, but lacks the plush ride of the Sierra and the premiumness of the 7XO. If you don't venture off the tarmac or don't do much off-roading, best to avoid the Roxx. The Sierra would be a good fit overall.

I am looking to replace my Volkswagen polo with a SUV for term usage. My running is occasional few times in city and twice a year long journey. I am looking at Honda Elevate and Renault Duster. Do you have any other suggestions?

Why don't you consider the Skoda Kushaq facelift instead? Being part of the VW group, the Kushaq will be a natural upgrade from your Polo - it is well-built, well-equipped and it drives well too. Both its engines (1.0L and 1.5L) deliver good performance. This should be high up on your shortlist.The Honda Elevate is a no nonsense option with excellent ride comfort, and a strong naturally aspirated petrol engine. The seating position is good, and it is nice to drive too. Refinement however isn't its strong suit.The Renault Duster also looks like a good option but we'll reserve our judgements till we actually drive it extensively.

Considering your requirements, the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara would be a good option to consider. It has good space for five adults, and the petrol engine with the manual gearbox is frugal. It handles well and has a good ride that is tuned with respect to our road conditions. It has not been officially tested by BNCAP or GNCAP, but since it is based on the same platform as the Maruti Suzuki Brezza (which received a 4-star safety rating), the Grand Vitara, with its added features, is likely to earn a minimum of 4 stars.The other option would be the Hyundai Creta with its naturally aspirated engine that is well-suited to the city. It has good space, a comfy ride and good safety, but it will not be as efficient as the Maruti car.Since fuel efficiency is a high priority, we would recommend the Grand Vitara.
