I want to purchase a first car for my daughter. I am interested in an automatic car mainly for city use. Monthly usage will be approximately 1,200 km. The car should be under ₹9 lakh. How is the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios, and what mileage can I expect from the AMT?

The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios is a good choice. It’s spacious for its size, comfortable, and very easy to drive in the city. The 1.2-litre petrol engine is smooth, and while the AMT adds convenience, it isn’t the slickest in the segment. In real-world conditions, you can expect around 10-12 kpl in the city and 15-16 kpl on the highway.
Another car you can consider is the Maruti Suzuki Swift. It has a proven, reliable engine paired with a smoother AMT, and it is unbeatable on fuel efficiency. In our real-world tests, it delivered over 12 kpl in the city and over 19 kpl on the highway.

I am planning to buy a hatchback. We currently own a Swift ZDi AMT and an Ertiga ZXi AT. The Swift has done around 1,30,000 km, while the Ertiga has only 12,000 km on the odometer. I am based in Bangalore. I mainly use the Ertiga for my daily commute to work, which involves a lot of bumper-to-bumper traffic and finding It difficult to drive Ertiga. I drive around 1,200-1,500 km per month, mostly for my daily office commute (around 20 km) and highway driving on weekends. I am considering trading in the Swift and upgrading to a new Swift ZXi+ AMT. My main priorities are hassle-free ownership and decent mileage. Before I finalise the Swift, are there any other hatchbacks that I should consider?

Given your priorities of hassle-free ownership, decent mileage and a comfortable city driving experience, the new Maruti Suzuki Swift ZXi+ AMT is a sensible choice. The Swift is reliable, easy to drive in traffic and offers good fuel efficiency, which aligns well with your daily commute and weekend highway runs. However, since you already own an Ertiga, it is worth considering the recently-updated Maruti Suzuki Baleno AMT as well. The Baleno offers a more spacious cabin, a larger boot, more features and a more premium feel, making it a better all-rounder for both city and highway use. It is also easy to drive and delivers the same reliability and efficiency. If you are open to looking beyond Maruti, the Hyundai i20 IVT is another strong contender. It offers a comfortable ride, a well-built cabin and a smoother CVT automatic gearbox, making it well-suited to Bangalore's traffic conditions.Overall, the Swift remains a solid choice, but the Baleno AMT is worth serious consideration given its additional space and comfort.

My monthly running is around 3000 km mostly on highways. I need a family car for 4 members. For me, family safety and comfort is priority. Which car should I buy between diesel or EV? Suggest me diesel as well as EV under a budget of around 25 lakhs.

With 3,000 km a month, mostly on highways, diesel is the clear recommendation. At that running, the fuel cost advantage of diesel becomes significant, and the long highway stretches play to the strengths of modern diesel engines. EVs are best suited to predictable city commutes with home charging, and while they can do highways, the charging infrastructure and stop planning still add friction on long, frequent trips. For the car, the Mahindra XUV 7XO is the recommendation. It is one of the most comfortable and spacious family SUVs in the segment, with a strong diesel engine that is well suited to highway cruising. It also has a good safety package and a comfortable ride, which is important for long-distance family travel. Within R.s 25 lakh budget, the AX7 variant will be ideal and you can opt between a 6-speed automatic or a less expensive 6-speed manual. Both gearboxes are smooth and easy to use. Also while the XUV 7XO does not get ADAS in this AX7 trim, you still get 6 airbags, a 360° camera, and your essential electronic safety assets as well. It has also scored a perfect 5-star rating for crash safety in Bharat NCAP so that adds some more reassurance as well.
