Hi, I am confused between the new Kia Seltos and the new Tata Harrier petrol. My monthly driving is around 500 km. I am looking for an automatic turbo-petrol car with good driving quality and low maintenance. My budget is ₹25 lakh.

The new Kia Seltos uses the previous car's 1.5-litre turbo direct injection petrol engine and is coupled to a 7-speed dual clutch autobox. The powertrain works well, delivering on performance and refinement.
The Tata Harrier petrol uses Tata Motors' newly launched 1.5-litre turbo direct injection engine, which is also refined and delivers a good drive experience.
Thus, in this regard, both cars deliver well; however, since you are looking for a car with low maintenance, we would recommend the Kia Seltos as Kia's are known to be generally more reliable and with the Tata engine being brand new, its service record is yet to be ascertained.

The cars you have shortlisted are very different, but based on your usage and your mileage requirement, we would suggest going for the Kia Seltos with the 1.5 litre naturally aspirated engine paired to the IVT automatic. The new Seltos has grown in size compared to the previous generation, which not only improves interior space, comfort and boot capacity, but also gives it better road presence. While it lacks outright punch, for most real world conditions and sedate driving it has more than enough performance, both in the city and on the highway. The biggest strength of this powertrain is its refinement and smoothness, which makes the Seltos a pleasure to drive, especially in urban conditions. In terms of mileage, the Seltos with this engine and gearbox should come close to your requirement of 12 kmpl or more, something the other two cars are unlikely to achieve. You can get the HTK(O) variant in your budget which is well loaded with features too.The Tata Harrier petrol, on the other hand, is larger and has more presence, but it is also more expensive. In fact, the Harrier turbo petrol with the 6 speed automatic costs over Rs 20 lakh on road, which is more than Rs 2 lakh over your budget. Fuel efficiency will also be lower than the Kia’s, as the Harrier is heavier, more powerful, and turbo petrol engines are generally more sensitive to throttle inputs. This issue is even more pronounced in the Mahindra Scorpio N. It is the heaviest car here, uses a large turbo petrol engine producing over 200 PS, and while it delivers effortless performance, efficiency takes a hit. Being based on a ladder frame chassis, it is more rugged, but for everyday use it won’t be as comfortable as the other two. If you want to buy a Mahindra, we would suggest looking at the new 7XO instead, as it is more practical, more comfortable, and will also be more fuel efficient.

I am planning to buy a new car and am confused between the Sierra Petrol AT Accomplished+ variant and the Tata Harrier Petrol AT Fearless X+ variant. I like both cars equally. Can you recommend which one to buy? I want a bold, muscular look.

If you want a car with strong road presence and bold looks, the Tata Sierra genuinely stands out on the road today. In fact, it is one of the best looking SUVs in the market right now.The Tata Harrier petrol is smoother and more powerful than the Sierra, but it doesn’t have the same wow factor. Apart from its striking design, the Sierra also has a better interior, with cabin quality that is a notch or two above the rest. So, given your preference for bold looks and design, the Sierra is the clear choice.

I’ve been using a 125 cc Bajaj Discover 125 ST since 2012. However, its braking and narrow tyres make me nervous when riding on the highway. In 2018, I bought an Apache RTR 200 4V. Though I liked its crisp performance and strong brakes, it felt too heavy for me. A couple of near accidents made me sell it the next year, and since then I’ve been using only the Discover 125 ST. Now I want to upgrade to another 125 cc bike with better braking, slightly wider tyres, similar kerb weight, and a kick starter.

If you want wider tyres in the 125cc sporty commuter space, you'll have to go for one of the sporty-looking, feature-loaded options like the TVS Raider, Hero Xtreme 125R and Honda CB125 Hornet. All have at least single-channel ABS on the higher variants and tyres that are grippy enough to handle all sorts of road conditions you might encounter, both of which should help you stop in a controlled manner. You've mentioned that having a kick starter is a priority for you, and of the bikes listed above, only the Hero has it as standard. However, these bikes are thoroughly modern, and their electric starters will work in just about every situation you find yourself in. So we'd advise you not to restrict yourself and potentially miss out on a high-quality product because of an antiquated notion like that.
