Hi, I am planning to buy an automatic car under 10 Lakh rupees. I was in a dilemma between the i20 Sportz IVT and the Tata Altroz Creative AMT. Which one would suit both city and highway driving with good fuel efficiency? Please advise.

Pick the AMT version of the Tata Altroz only if fuel efficiency is extremely important to you. Do keep in mind, the AMT is quite jerky, and the drive won't be as seamless as the Hyundai i20 CVTs or as the Altroz DCA's, both of which are far smoother options.
If you love the Altroz for what it is, consider spending a bit more and getting the dual-clutch automatic version for a much superior drive experience.

For mostly city driving with a budget of around Rs 10 lakh on-road, the Hyundai i20 1.2 IVT is the best upgrade from your current i10. It is easy to manoeuvre in traffic, the smooth CVT auto keeps running costs reasonable, and Hyundai’s service network and ownership experience are among the best in the segment. Though a mid-spec variant is what you'll get on your budget, the car is also decently equipped for the price, and the 1.2 petrol engine is smooth and reliable for daily city use.The other CVT available at this price is the Honda Amaze CVT, and here, too, you will get a mid-spec variant that is decently equipped. The sedan body style will feel like an upgrade from your i10, and offers more interior space and a bigger boot. The engine is more powerful and fun to drive than Hyundai's 1.2 petrol, and is also incredibly fuel-efficient.If you want an SUV body style, check out the Nissan Magnite, though, at your budget, you might have to settle for the naturally aspirated petrol with the AMT gearbox, and not the turbocharged engine with the CVT gearbox. Overall, however, we think the Hyundai car is the best upgrade for you.

An ideal upgrade from your Santro is the Hyundai i20 IVT, which is powered by a refined 1.2-litre petrol engine that's mated to a smooth and seamless automatic transmission. This Hyundai car is spacious, feature-rich and feels like a huge step up over your outgoing car. And it will easily fit your Rs 10-12 lakh budget.However, since you've mentioned that you want a car of a similar size to the Santro, we'd advise you to opt for the Grand i10 Nios instead. It is more compact in size than an i20, which makes it easier to drive and manage. It is powered by the same engine as the i20, although it's mated to an AMT, which gets you the convenience of an automatic, but is not as smooth as the i20's transmission. Also, the Grand i10 is much more affordable than the i20, and even though it has fewer features, it has almost all the features that you'd use daily.In summary, the Nios is a sophisticated, compact replacement for the Santro that'll cost you between Rs 8-9.5 lakhs, but if you're looking to upgrade, then the i20 IVT is the one to go for, that's priced between Rs 10-12 lakh (on-road).

It seems like you are looking for a fun-to-drive car, so with a budget of Rs 10 lakh and a clear preference for a petrol, manual, turbocharged car, a good option would be the Hyundai i20 N Line. The N Line comes with a peppy 1.0-litre turbocharged direct injection engine, which is really fun to drive, and the car has a nice sporty look to it as well. It's fairly well equipped with bits like a touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a Bose music system, a sunroof and a few more. The N6 version is just around the Rs 10 lakh mark, and with some dealer schemes, you could get the car for less too, so make sure you bargain.

I'm planning to buy a small automatic car for my wife, who is 5'1" tall. The car will be used mostly in the city, with occasional highway trips. Which would be the best option?

For your wife, consider the Hyundai Exter. At 5'1", she will benefit from its good all-round visibility, light steering and compact dimensions, which make it very easy to manoeuvre in city traffic and tight parking spaces. This Hyundai car also gets driver's seat height adjustment from the base trim, which will be very handy for your wife. The AMT gearbox is smooth enough for daily commuting, and the car is very easy to drive. Fuel efficiency is decent; expect 9 to 10kpl in the city and 15kpl on the highway.If you want something a bit more efficient, consider the Maruti Suzuki Swift. In our testing we managed 12.7kpl in the city and 19kpl on the highway with the AGS. However, height adjustment for the driver's seat is only available on the ZXi trim onwards.Overall, the Hyundai Exter AMT is the better fit for your requirements. It is simple, reliable, easy to drive and well-suited to both city use and occasional highway trips.

Is it worth waiting for the new BREZZA, or are there better alternatives for Mumbai city use and a few random trips outside, say 2 to 3 in a year, up to Pune, Panchgani, etc

Go for the Brezza, but wait for the new model as it's just a few weeks away. The Brezza is easy to drive in traffic, rides well over broken roads and speed breakers, and the automatic is smooth and stress-free. The cabin is airy, the visibility is good, and Maruti service reach in the city makes ownership simple. For the odd Pune or Panchgani run, it feels stable enough if driven in a relaxed manner. A point to consider if you often go up the ghats with four people and luggage: the 1.5 petrol is smooth but not very strong, so overtakes need a little planning.If that bothers you, the Skoda Kylaq with the automatic is the better alternative. It feels quicker in the hills and in gaps, and the gearbox responds a bit faster, which helps both on the ghats and in stop-go Mumbai traffic. You will trade a slightly firmer ride and a lower city mileage for that extra shove.For mostly city use, though, buying the Brezza is the sensible call.
