I want to buy a 7-seater SUV. My budget is Rs 25-28 lakh. I want something that is comfortable, powerful and offers a strong punch while driving. Looks are also important to me.

The Mahindra XUV 7XO is a good option to consider. It is available with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine that makes 203hp and 380Nm, and a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine that makes 185hp and 420Nm (450Nm with the auto). Both engines are available with a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic gearbox. The turbo-petrol engine of this Mahindra car is punchy and fun to drive, while the diesel engine is more relaxed and excels at highway cruising.
The XUV 7XO is also spacious, has a comfortable cabin and ride quality, and has a long list of features. It is also a fairly large SUV that has good road presence. The XUV 7XO on-road price in Kota starts at Rs 15.87 lakh and goes up to Rs 29.44 lakh (ex-showroom, India).

I am currently planning to buy a new car in the ₹17-19 lakh range. My priorities are safety, decent performance, and good mileage. I am considering the Mahindra XUV 3XO AX diesel and the Kia Seltos HTK variant. I do not have a fixed running pattern since I am a doctor, so my daily driving can range anywhere from 10 to 100 km per day. I was also thinking about waiting for MG Motor to launch a plug-in hybrid. Considering my usage pattern and priorities, what would be the best option for me?

Considering your priorities, the Kia Seltos in diesel guise would be the better choice. It is compact for the city but also has good space on the inside. The quality of the interior is very good, and the 1.5-litre diesel engine is tried and tested. It has a good amount of punch and response, and should you opt for the manual version, the clutch is light and convenient in traffic. The Seltos also has a better after-sales and service network, and Kia's are known to be quite reliable too. The Mahindra XUV7XO is also a good choice, but if you don't need an extra row of seats, it is a bit more cumbersome than the Seltos. Also, within your budget, you will only get the entry-level version of the 7XO, whereas the Seltos on HTK trim gets a decent equipment list.

Is it a good time to buy the Innova Crysta now, or should I go with the Safari? Which is the better option? I am looking for a 7-seater SUV. Or is there any other option to consider?

While the Toyota Innova Crysta does have its merits, namely reliability and resale value, the Tata Safari is a better choice in almost every other way. The Tata Safari uses a monocoque chassis with independent suspension, which gives it much better ride quality than the ladder-frame chassis and solid rear axle of the Crysta. The Safari also has a more modern interior, is much better equipped, and offers better performance, with the option of an automatic gearbox, which the Crysta no longer has. Considering all of these factors, the Safari would be our pick between the two. However, if you are looking for alternatives, the Mahindra XUV 7XO is a more direct competitor to the Safari. The ride quality with the new Da Vinci suspension is superb. It is better equipped with things like the triple-screen setup as standard, and its diesel engine offers better performance too.
