Hi, my daily commute is about 50 km, with one longer trip of 200–300 km each month. I’m looking to buy a new car (preferably an EV or diesel) with a budget of ₹18–25 lakh and want premium looks and features. Is it worth buying an EV now, or is choosing a diesel still a wise decision? Please advise.

Buying a diesel does have some level of uncertainty given the constant negativity around it, be it from official statements as to its certified life or restrictions on its usage on heavy air pollution days.

Thus, if you are open to an electric, we would advise you to go ahead with this. Furthermore, your daily running is low, and even your occasional long distances are 300kms which should be manageable with something like the Kia Carens Clavis EV.

The Clavis EV also has a nice and premium interior and is very well equipped in typical Kia fashion. The recently launched Mahindra XEV 9S is also a very good option, again with a premium interior and a good equipment list.

Is this typical of turbo-petrol engines? My car has a CVT transmission. Yes, turbo petrol engines, especially when paired with an automatic transmission, tend to be quite thirsty in city driving. This is because the turbocharger frequently spools up to provide boost, which increases fuel consumption. Turbo petrols are also very throttle-sensitive.With gentle driving, your MG Hector can return reasonable mileage, but slightly enthusiastic inputs can quickly pull the figures down. If fuel efficiency is a concern, you could consider a naturally aspirated petrol engine, which is generally more efficient and consistent in everyday driving conditions.

Most EVs on the market today will easily offer a range sufficient to cover your 100 km a day, and over the course of time, you will definitely save a lot in fuel bills.However, it is very important to note that you must have access to your own charging at home or your place of work. Relying on public chargers will be difficult, given that you will have to find one vacant and working and then spend your time there.We are unaware of your budget, but you can consider the Tata Punch EV or the Hyundai Creta Electric, both of which are good choices in their respective segments.

Usage will mainly be within the city for office commuting, along with some outstation trips. The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga is a good option to consider. It is spacious, comfortable and easy to drive. The 1.5-litre petrol engine is refined and offers good performance, and the CNG option is also available if you want to keep running costs low.The Ertiga is also quite reliable and has a strong service network, which should make it easy to maintain.

Asked by: Gaurav Gupta I am planning to buy a BMW M340i for long-distance trips into wildlife reserves, as I have a strong interest in wildlife. I have two concerns, one is the E20 petrol. The M340i engine is a high-compression engine and needs high-octane fuel. With E20 petrol now available across the country, will this cause any issues for my engine? The other worry is the low tyre profile on bad roads, which may lead to punctures. Do give me your best advice. On E20 fuel, you don’t have to worry at all. In fact, you should be happy because the base octane rating for E20 fuel has jumped from 91 octane to a minimum of 95 octane or even higher. Hence, this suits the 11.0:1 compression ratio of the M340i’s B58 engine, and now, instead of hunting for high-octane fuel, you can use fuel anywhere, as you are now assured of 95 octane.A bigger concern are the low profile tyres, which are staggered with 225/40 R19 in front and an even lower 255/35 R19 at the back. This could be a problem on bad roads, where the tyres could be vulnerable to impact damage.One way to protect the tyres against punctures, but not guaranteed, is to pump up the tyre pressure by about 3-4PSI to make the sidewalls stiffer. This reduces the flex in the sidewalls and makes them more resistant to impact damage, but quite honestly, the BMW M340i is not a car we would take into the jungle!
