Is the Royal Enfield Scram 440 a good choice for touring with some off-road capability? My budget is Rs. 3 lakh. Please also suggest other suitable options.

The Royal Enfield Scram 440 is a good choice for your usage, although bear in mind that during tight and technical off-road sections, its near-200 kilo kerb weight will need a lot of caution and skill to work around. As a road bike, it is a comfortable, relaxed and fuss-free companion but if you want the latest features and gadgets, this is not the bike for you. 

The 350cc Triumph Scrambler 400 X is a good allrounder and is actually a rather good handler despite its 19-in front wheel and dual-purpose tyres. Its engine isn't the most characterful though and the tall 835mm saddle may not work for you if you're a shorter person. 

These are two of the best made-in-India scrambler machines under Rs 3 lakh and depending on the sort of experience you are after, both will work well.

I was planning for a scooter, and my options were Burgman Street, Access and Activa, but I got to know that Honda is going to launch its maxi scooter ADV160 in India by the end of 2026 or early 2027. I decided to wait and go for it as I am very impressed with its looks and performance (seen some reviews of the Thailand and Philippines versions). Autocar team, can you help with whether it is worth the wait in terms of value for money, city and highway riding comfort and ownership?

There's no telling if a future product will meet your individual expectations regarding value for money, riding experience and overall peace of mind from an ownership standpoint. If you are interested in the Honda ADV160, we'd recommend you wait until media and ownership reviews are both out before you go ahead with your purchase to make an informed decision.If you are not comfortable with that, then pick between the proven options you have shortlisted above by taking a test ride of each scooter.

I own a Hunter 350 that has done 17,000km and will complete four years this December. I enjoyed the KTM 390 Adventure test ride and am also considering the Himalayan 450. Should I keep the Hunter and buy an ADV, or replace it with a Guerrilla 450?

Whether or not you want to keep your Hunter and supplement your garage or have only one bike to handle everything is a personal decision, and we'd advise you to evaluate your priorities and make that decision.What we can tell you is that the 398cc KTM 390 Adventure will be more fun than the RE Himalayan 450 with its explosive top-end rush and significantly lower weight. If you do choose to keep the Hunter, then going with a machine that's markedly different in character and from a different brand makes more sense, so you get to choose between two distinct flavours of motorcycling as and when you wish.

I want to buy a 125 cc scooter for daily commute, sometimes I also travel with a female member of my family as a pillion. Mileage is also of some importance to me. Further, I also want a good ride quality as I have some issues with back pain. I like Ntorq Race XP the most, but the problem with it is that it does not have ample space for 2 and lacks mileage. New Access, I have heard that it has 10-inch rear wheels and a very stiff suspension, which hampers the ride quality in the city. The new burgeman also has the same problem. Jupiter 125 has less mileage but good suspension, but most of the users are reporting rattling of the body after just 1 or 2 years of use. Please suggest the best 125 cc scooter I can buy as per my needs Good ride quality Decent mileage Decent space for 2 people to commute

We're not sure where you're getting your information from, but the Access and Burgman definitely don't have 'stiff' suspension that will hamper ride quality inside the city. On the contrary, especially so with a pillion, the Access and Burgman have some of the best seating and suspension comfort in the 125cc space. The Suzuki scooters also have rather frugal engines, and when ridden sensibly, you should see 45-50kpl, if not more.The TVS Jupiter 125 is another great option to look at with its spacious seat and plush suspension, and one unique feature it has is that its monoshock comes with a handy winged preload adjuster, which makes it easy to tune the suspension based on the load you're carrying on the vehicle. Coming to the matter of rattling body panels, this may be the case on some isolated units, which may not have been maintained properly and doesn't seem like a widespread, routinely reported one. We'd advise you to disregard whatever misconceptions you may have about these scooters and instead take test rides of all three before you make your decision.

I am very much impressed by the Norton Atlas adv. Should I wait for it, or is there any other similar adv, right now, close to it in specs but better? Also, I want only an adv. Highway touring is a priority, and the budget is 7L.

The only real peer to the Norton Atlas available currently is the Kawasaki Versys 650, which comfortably blows past your Rs 7 lakh budget, limiting your choice to waiting for the Atlas. The new Norton ADV looks very impressive on paper, but we'd recommend you take the sensible and patient route and wait for some time after the bike is launched before purchasing it, so any teething issues that do arise can be ironed out by the time you are an owner.

Since you have the budget that permits you to venture into the 300-400cc category if you so wish, you can look at the Royal Enfield Hunter / Classic / Bullet 350, any of the Honda CB350 models and even the 350cc Triumph 400 models like the Speed T4 and Speed 400. These bikes are premium machines with larger engines than normal commuters, which means fuel economy will range between 30-40kpl most likely, although mileage can vary quite widely depending on multiple factors. If you want to prioritise fuel economy and instead settle for something more frugal, like a 160cc commuter will be our recommendation. Options like the Bajaj Pulsar N160, TVS Apache RTR 160 4V and Honda Unicorn / SP160 are our picks in this class. The Apache and Pulsar are more powerful and feature-rich machines, while the Unicorn and SP160 are straightforward, no-nonsense commuters. Make sure to decide which segment you want to shop in and then take a test ride of all the options in that class before you make your decision.

I have lower back pain and currently ride a Bullet 350 ES with gas-filled rear suspension and a well-padded touring seat. It is comfortable on long rides, but fuel efficiency with E20 fuel is a major issue. I also have to use additives or fill premium petrol; otherwise, power delivery becomes jerky. Putting XP100 improves efficiency substantially, but the price difference is significant, and availability is limited. I want to buy an additional scooter or a 100-150cc motorcycle that is very kind on my back. I recently read about the Destini 110 having superb plush suspension. What else would you suggest within a budget of under Rs. 1 lakh for around 150km of daily riding? The bike must have excellent suspension and ride quality.

Since your daily run is quite long and you value comfort and fuel efficiency over all else, we'd recommend you stick with a commuter motorcycle. In your budget, if you want a bike that's comfortable over bad roads, then the Bajaj Platina 110 is our recommendation. Its thickly padded seat, pliant suspension and neutral ergonomics will keep you comfortable for longer distances over all sorts of roads. The Platina's one big drawback is that it cannot be had with a disc brake, and its drums provide only adequate performance.In that vein, it would be prudent to look at the TVS Radeon. The Radeon has similar strong suits as the Platina, but it can be had with a front disc brake on its top variant, which is the one we'd recommend for reliable stopping power over a longer duration.Take test rides of both to see which one you resonate with more before you make your decision.
