I’m planning to buy a car. I’m a 37-year-old man and feel confused about which option would be both safe and comfortable for city driving as well as occasional highway use. I’m looking for an automatic variant, with a budget of up to ₹8-9 lakh. Please suggest suitable options.

Almost all cars today are equipped with basic safety features like ESP, along with ABS with EBD. It helps prevent an accident in the first place, and these also have 6 airbags to protect the occupants in case of a collision.

Hence, as far as safety features go, most cars have you covered. That said, if you're looking for an automatic vehicle with an excellent 5-star BNCAP crash test rating within your budget, the Maruti Dzire AMT is the one to go for.

The engine is smooth and refined, and even the AMT (automatic) is relatively smoother than many other options at this price. The cabin is spacious and comfortable, and it drives well on the highway, too.

Alternatively, you could consider the Maruti Baleno or Toyota Glanza, both of which are 4-star BNCAP-rated vehicles.

"Hey, I'm stuck between the Maruti Baleno zeta or alpha, Tata Punch adventure, and Honda Amaze vx - all with automatics. I'm looking for good safety features, decent mileage, and low maintenance costs, with durability being a top priority. My current ride's a WagonR automatic. Any advice?" My monthly drive is 2500-3000km

Given how much you drive, you'd be happiest with the Honda Amaze CVT. It's got the most sophisticated gearbox and its smoothness will have a big bearing on your drive experience. The Amaze offers ample safety features and its reassuring to know that its a 5 star Bharat NCAP-rated model. Hondas are easy to maintain, very reliable and will not give trouble for years. Do note, the Amaze CVT is decent on fuel economy but won't be as fuel efficient as the other two that use simpler AMT gearboxes. If fuel economy is a key priority, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno AGS is your best bet.

I am confused about whether to buy a new sedan or a sub-4 metre compact SUV in petrol with a budget of around Rs 10 lakh. I am not a frequent traveler and the car will mostly remain parked, with a monthly running of about 100-200 km, except for occasional outstation trips. However, I still need a car for family use as we are a family of four. Which type of car would be the better choice?

We would recommend you look at the Maruti Suzuki Dzire as the car is very reliable and spacious enough for a family of four. Also, assuming no one in your family is really very tall, as rear headroom will be tight for taller people, those around 5 feet 10 inches and above. Boot space would also be adequate for your few trips outside of the city. Just slightly above your budget is the fully loaded ZXi + variant. Though we would recommend you opt for the one below - the ZXi. This variant will give you all of the essential features like automatic AC, touchscreen with wireless phone connectivity and all of the safety features too, while coming in below your budget. You would also miss the sunroof, which frankly has limited utility, and in the Dzire is a very small unit and only lowers the headroom.

Hi, I am planning to buy a new car with an on-road budget of up to Rs 10.5 lakh. My usage is very low, not even 200 km per month, and I want a car that is reliable for long-term ownership, has low maintenance and delivers at least 15 kmpl mileage in the city. I usually drive at speeds of around 80-100 kmph. I am confused between the Maruti Baleno Zeta, Honda Amaze VX, Tata Altroz Creative, Tata Punch and Kia Sonet HTK Plus. Which car would be the most suitable choice?

The Maruti Suzuki Baleno will be the best pick for you. It delivers the best fuel economy and will be the most affordable to maintain and service. The Baleno is a nice product too. It's pleasant to drive with peppy performance for city use and is quite spacious for its size.
