The scale of growth in India’s electric two-wheeler segment over the past decade puts the current numbers in context. In 2017, just 1,516 electric two-wheelers were sold in the country –  a 0.008 percent share of the 18.81 million motorcycles, scooters and mopeds retailed that year. The segment crossed the 1,50,000-unit mark for the first time in 2021 (1,64,195 units) and then leapt 303 percent to 6,61,633 units in 2022 as the modern wave of electric scooters from Ola, Ather and TVS began gaining traction. The one-million milestone followed in 2024 (1.21 million units), which was then surpassed by 2025 (1.34 million or 13.4 lakh units) when e2Ws achieved a 6 percent share of all two-wheeler sales.

In 2026, the pace has accelerated further, with the petrol and CNG price hikes in May proving to be a significant demand catalyst. Electric two-wheelers now account for 8.17 percent of two-wheelers sold in India – up from 6 percent for the whole of 2025. They accounted for 56 percent of all EVs sold in India over the past decade, making them the single largest driver of the country’s EV transition.
