Mercedes has officially unveiled the high-performance version of the C-class coupé, the AMG C 63 Coupé. The AMG Coupé shares a few components with its standard coupé sibling but gets an extensively reworked body and chassis.

The most prominent change on the AMG C 63 Coupé is the aggressive body kit that's been added and the styling tweaks. The AMG Coupé stands wider than the standard car with the front fenders extended by 64mm and the rear by 66mm. The widening of the body allows the coupé to house the heavily reworked chassis and wider tyres. The front tyres are 255mm wide while the rear units are at 285mm.

At the front, the AMG C 63 Coupé gets a single bar grille, a more aggressive bumper than the standard coupé, prominent air vents and a central air-dam with black inserts. The bonnet is also different here, with a more contoured unit. On the flanks, the AMG C 63 Coupé gets black wing-mirror housings and beefed-up side sills along with V8 turbo badges on the front fenders.

The components carried over from the standard AMG C 63 Coupé are the frameless doors, roof and boot lid.

At the back, the boot lid receives an integrated spoiler while the redesigned rear bumper gets a central diffuser and AMG’s signature quad trapezoidal exhausts.

Inside, the car gets an AMG-specific instrument cluster, gear selector and trim application along with a multifunction flat bottomed steering wheel and sports seats at the front. As option, more contoured performance seats are also offered.

Mechanically is where the car stands apart from the standard coupé. The chassis has been heavily reworked with wider tracks, a new rear axle carrier and increased negative camber. Powering the AMG C 63 Coupé is the same 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 that features in the AMG C 63 sedan. As with the sedan, the engine is offered in two states of tune – 469bhp and 66.22kgm of torque and a more powerful 503bhp and 71.34kgm of torque in the top spec S guise. Power is transferred to the rear wheels through a seven-speed automatic gearbox. The standard AMG C 63 Coupé gets a mechanical locking differential while the higher-spec S model gets an electronic unit.

Mercedes claims that in the standard guise the AMG C 63 Coupé can sprint from 0-100kph in 4.0 seconds and reach an electronically limited top speed of 250kph. The AMG C 63 S also gets a electronically limited top speed of 250kph though it covers the 0-100kph sprint in a claimed 3.9 seconds. Top speed can be increased to 290kph with the purchase of the AMG Driver’s Package.

The AMG C 63 Coupé also gets adjustable suspension with three modes to choose from. In addition, the car also gets a choice of four drive modes that adjust the settings for steering, engine and gearbox. The higher spec S trim gets an added mode called ‘Race’.

Mercedes will showcase the AMG C 63 Coupé alongside the standard C-class Coupé at the Frankfurt motor show in September this year. The company has also confirmed that the AMG C 63 Coupé will go on sale internationally sometime in March 2016.
