Volvo has unveiled its new Concept XC Coupé, which the carmaker will showcase at the upcoming Detroit Motor Show 2014.

The new Volvo Concept XC Coupé previews the next-generation XC90 SUV, that we'll probably see by the end of this year. This concept follows last year’s Concept Coupé that Volvo showcased and is the second of three concept cars penned by Thomas Ingenlath, Volvo’s design chief.  Each of these concepts has been designed to preview what upcoming Volvos will look like and also highlight Volvo’s flexible SPA (Scalable Platform Architecture).

This new platform will roll out with the new XC90 SUV and will be used by all future models larger than the Volvo V40. According to the designer, the final production version of the new XC90 SUV will be a seven-seater and will look like a proper SUV.

Ingenlath says the Concept XC Coupé has been inspired by the design of modern sports equipment and will be pitched at people with active lifestyles. This is reflected in the way the two rear seats fold flat to store sports equipment, as well as with the concept's roof box and with the materials used for the body cladding and trim. Larger 21-inch alloys are fitted to the concept, as are flared wheel arches, a taller roofline, a longer bonnet and more prominent beltline.
