Volkswagen had earlier announced that it will introduce as many as 19 new SUVs in its global line-up. The T-Cross will be the smallest of them all, when it sees an international unveil in the second half of next year. The new T-Cross SUV will keep its concept’s name – just like the larger T-Roc - and will share styling as well.

This new small SUV from Volkswagen is likely to share underpinnings with the latest-gen Volkswagen Polo and the recently unveiled Virtus sedan. It could also share various mechanical, interior and exterior elements as well with these two models. As far as size goes, it is expected to be around 4.1 meters long with a wheelbase in the region of 2.5 meters.

Engine options could include a turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine with 112hp and 175Nm, the same engine that was used on the T-Cross concept. The T-Cross concept came mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox with power sent to the front wheels. Larger four-cylinder turbocharged units are also expected. For emerging markets like South America, expect VW to offer variants with a five-speed manual gearbox along with six-speed DSG.

Volkswagen’s new small SUV, the T-Cross, when launched will take on the Hyundai Creta, Jeep Renegade, Nissan Kicks and the Renault Captur in markets abroad. However, there is uncertainty regarding the T-Cross’ arrival in India. Earlier, the T-Cross could have been one of the first products from Tata and VW’s alliance in India. On the positive side, Volkswagen is believed to be still looking at the T-Cross for India.
