Volkswagen has introduced new Sport editions of its Polo hatchback and Ameo compact sedan at Rs 6.93 lakh and Rs 8.30 lakh. The Vento Sport, which went on sale in March, gets a revised price tag of Rs 10.70 lakh (prices ex-showroom, India). The models have been launched to help the brand cash in on the upcoming FIFA football championship.
As before, the Sport editions are based on the respective car’s top-spec variant, with all the same features and equipment list. The only differentiating factors are the blacked-out roof, black rear spoiler, faux carbon-fibre finish on the outside mirrors, and 'Sport' decals on the doors.
The Sport editions get no mechanical changes and are available with both petrol and diesel engine options of the standard models. However, for the Vento Sport, diesel is only available on the automatic trim.
As we had reported earlier, VW is currently in consolidation mode in India and is not expected to launch any all-new models in the country any time soon. The brand is focusing its efforts on non-product aspects of the business. Its arrangement with Skoda will see the Czech carmaker lead product development for the two brands in India, but the first batch of new models is still a few years away.
This year saw Volkswagen discontinuing its 1.2-litre petrol engine across its model range and replacing it with a new and more frugal 1.0-litre motor. It also brought out limited-edition, mid-spec Pace models for the Polo and Ameo.
