Details about the engine line-up for the next-gen Mercedes E-class have surfaced on the internet. The car is expected to carry over certain engines while also getting a family of all-new four-cylinder engines.

Set to make its debut at the Detroit motor show in January 2016, the E-class gets a family of new four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines in varying states of tunes. The four-cylinder diesel unit is expected to deliver an output between 148bhp to 228bhp depending on the variant, while the 3.0-litre V6 diesel from the current model is expected to be updated and carried forward. A twin-turbo straight-six diesel engine is also likely to make its debut in the new E-class.

The four-cylinder, 2.0-litre turbo-petrol motor is expected to pump out between 181bhp and 241bhp as per the variant. The 2016 E-class also gets an in-line six-cylinder turbo-petrol motor developing 329bhp in the E400 and 362bhp in the E450 AMG. The range-topping AMG model will be powered by the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 from the AMG C 63 and AMG GT.

A petrol hybrid model will also be available in the E350 e, and a diesel hybrid is also expected to be offered.

Transmission duty on the new E-class will be handled by a six-speed manual or a nine-speed automatic gearbox. The manual is expected to only be offered on the diesel variants. Power will be sent either to the rear wheels or to all four wheels via Mercedes’ 4Matic all-wheel-drive system.

Mercedes is also developing a long-wheelbase version of the E-class, and a Maybach E-class with the LWB model being considered for the India and China markets.
