Mitsubishi’s specialist technology division, Mitsubishi Electric, will showcase next-generation human machine interface (HMI) technology at the upcoming Tokyo motor show.

The HMI systems are set to be integrated into future production models and will allow passengers to interact with the onboard AI while gaining information through augmented reality.

Mitsubishi Electric has chosen an all-electric autonomous concept called Emirai 4 to demonstrate how the technology works. The model uses a heads-up display to superimpose a computer-generated image onto the windscreen, aiding the driver by making road markings such as lane dividers and signs more prominent.

The concept also offers a 360-degree view of its surroundings, showing objects in 3D, unlike the 2D displays on current production cars. It also features lights in the door that alert passing cars of exiting passengers.

Mitsubishi Electric is also experimenting with driver monitoring technology, which can adjust climate control settings to reduce driver fatigue. The system will enhance autonomous control of the car if it detects that the driver’s concentration has reduced.

Mitsubishi Electric is planning to introduce these safety systems to the wider automotive market. Mitsubishi Motors is no longer part of the Mitsubishi group, having joined the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. Hence the tech that is being developed will not automatically be adopted by the automotive manufacturer.
