Mercedes AMG CEO Michael Schiebe said that work is underway to ascertain if an electric version of its two-door GT sportscar is viable. "The question is whether there's a market big enough to justify the necessary investment. At least from a technology point of view, we know how to do that," Schiebe had said at the 2025 Munich motor show.

  1. If launched, the AMG GT EV will directly rival the Maserati Granturismo Folgore
  2. It will be sold alongside the AMG GT ICE
  3. Range, battery and motor specs unclear right now

Should it enter production, the electric GT would be sold alongside the combustion-run AMG GT, which the brand will continue to invest in well into the next decade. AMG recently showcased the GT XX concept, previewing a four-door performance electric vehicle set to arrive in 2026.

New AMG GT EV launch timeline

Flexible timeframe.

The Mercedes AMG GT currently on sale is purchased mainly as a second car by those who love driving, and its electric counterpart would need to focus on the same, highlighted the performance division's boss. Coming to the launch timeline of the new electric sportscar, Mercedes hasn't put a timeframe on it and is flexible about the same. This means that it could speed up the market launch if interest in performance electric cars suddenly increases over the next few years.

Mercedes AMG CEO Michael Schiebe.

"We are, at the moment, trying to understand what's going on in the market. I would say we are very successful with our combustion-engined GT two-door, so we will focus on that first. And then let's see when the right point and time is there to launch a two-door EV," the AMG boss said further.

The new AMG EV may be positioned as a halo model.

Schiebe went on to say that Mercedes-AMG was more successful investing in their two-door combustion-engined platform than doing this on the electric side. "Sometimes you make a car which is not the most profitable one, but you do it because it's so important for the brand, and you need to do it because it's a brand-shaper," he said while hinting that the two-door AMG GT EV may arrive as a halo car, irrespective of its commercial viability.

At the 2012 Paris motor show, Mercedes revealed an electric version of the AMG SLS, which even set an EV lap record at the Nurburgring. The AMG SLS EV, however, sold in extremely low numbers and was discontinued in a few years without a direct successor.
