Mercedes has begun work on the updated M-Class SUV. The facelifted M-Clas is expected to get several major design changes to the current SUV, which was introduced in 2011. Based on Mercedes' typical vehicle life cycle of eight years, a facelifted version is definitely due.

Among the changes expected on the updated model is a significant front-end redesign to bring the M-class in line with the current Mercedes family. A larger, more prominent front grille and new family headlight clusters, such as those seen on the new S-class and C-class models, are likely.  A similar redesign at the rear gives the facelifted M-class a new lower rear bumper, which now completely encloses its dual exhausts. Updated rear light clusters are also expected, although the units seen here keep the same overall shape as the current car.

New trim and material upgrades to the M-class's interior should help to push its premium credentials, while a larger central infotainment screen will come with the latest generation of the German marque's Comand infotainment system. The car is also likely to come with the same touch-sensitive controller as the latest Mercedes models, including the new V-class. While minor economy and emissions tweaks to the M-class's existing range of engines are expected, reports suggest Mercedes could also bring in a new hybrid model to compete against Porsche's Cayenne S E-Hybrid.

The facelifted Mercedes M-class is likely to make its public debut before the end of the year, ahead of going on sale internationally early next year.
