Unveiled at the Los Angeles motor show, the luxurious new limited-edition Mercedes-Maybach S650 Cabriolet will crown Mercedes-Benz’s recently-introduced S-class Cabriolet line-up. The four-seat open-top's production will be limited to just 300 units, with each getting its own numbered key ring and a certificate signed by Mercedes-Benz chairman Dieter Zetsche.
Powering the S650 Cabriolet is the same twin-turbocharged 6.0-litre V12 petrol engine used by the Mercedes-AMG S65 saloon. The engine delivers 630hp at 4,800rpm and 999Nm of torque between 2,300 and 4,300rpm. The heady reserves are channelled through Mercedes-Benz’s seven-speed 7G-Tronic automatic gearbox to the rear wheels. No official weight figure has been released as yet. However, Mercedes-Maybach quotes a 0-100kph time of 4.1sec and limited 249kph top speed.
According to senior Mercedes-Maybach officials, the new “650” model nomenclature is set to be adopted by other V12-powered Maybach models as well.
The S650 Cabriolet is underpinned by a specially-tuned version of the AirMatic air suspension system seen in other S-class Cabriolets. The model retains the same predominantly aluminium bodyshell as other open-top S-class models but adds a limited number of distinguishing design features. These new design features include a front bumper with a restyled lower section largely in chrome, Swarovski crystal-encrusted headlamps, and unique 20-inch alloy wheels. Maybach badges are incorporated within the grille, front fenders, lower boot lid, and atop the tonneau cover at the rear of the cabin as well.
Exclusive interior elements include the nut brown magnolia trim, ‘1 of 300’ lettering on the cup holder, and Maybach logos within the steering wheel, seats, rear of the head rests and centre console. The model also gets an entrance lighting function that projects a Maybach logo onto the ground upon opening the doors.
All of the options available on the S-class Cabriolet are fitted as standard, including the Airscarf neck ventilation and wind-reducing Aircap systems. Mercedes-Maybach has also developed nine new interior colour combinations for the latest model and will supply its new model with a standard quilted car cover with Maybach identification.
The Mercedes-Maybach S650 Cabriolet is planned to go on sale globally in the second quarter of 2017.
