The much-awaited Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-door, also known as Jimny long or Suzuki YWD, has been spotted in what seems like final production form, weeks ahead of its slated global debut at Auto Expo 2023

  1. Jimny 5-door gets longer wheelbase
  2. Will come with K15B petrol engine
  3. Expected to get two gearbox options

Jimny 5-door: What do the spy photos reveal?

Seen somewhere in North India, the Jimny 5-door seems to be undergoing the final round of tests without any camo. This is the first-ever sighting of the Jimny 5-door and what’s seen here confirms that – apart from the longer wheelbase, two more doors and a bigger bodyshell – it may not differ too much visually from its 3-door counterpart. The Jimny 5-door is based on the global version of the Jimny (also known as Jimny Sierra), which comes with chunky alloy wheels and fender flares.

Seen in these pictures in its popular 'Kinetic Yellow' exterior paint shade, the Jimny 5-door clearly is much longer than its 3-door version. Set to measure around 3,850mm in length, the Jimny 5-door’s wheelbase will be longer by 300mm, at 2,550mm, than the 2,250mm wheelbase of the 3-door version. The newly designed door for the second-row passengers blends neatly with the Jimny’s boxy body style but gets a much smaller 'usable' rear glass area, due to a large-ish quarter glass for the rear door. The extended portion behind the rear door is also new and has a unique glass area surrounded by thick pillars at both corners. The Jimny 5-door gets no major styling changes at the back and carries the same side opening door with exposed hinges, a door-mounted spare tyre with black covering, and the same rear bumper and tail-lamp design as the 3-door Jimny.

Jimny 5-door: 1.5-litre K15B engine to continue

As reported by us before, the Jimny 5-door will continue with the K15B engine and is expected to come with the same 4-speed automatic and 5-speed manual gearbox options. Suzuki’s AllGrip Pro 4WD with a manual transfer case and low range will be standard on most variants, according to sources.

Jimny 5-door: India launch timeline

While the Jimny 5-door's trial production is expected to take place in the coming weeks, its series production will only start sometime next year. A market launch in India is only expected to take place by mid-2023.

While the Jimny 5-door will be one of the showstoppers for Maruti, the brand will also take the wraps off an all-new Baleno-based coupe-SUV as well as an all-new Creta-sized EV SUV concept. Additionally, there are talks of a flex-fuel concept to be on display as well.
