Maruti plans Manesar expansion

Maruti Suzuki India is setting up a new assembly plant in Manesar with a total investment of 35 billion yen (Rs 1925crore), making it the company’s third plant in the same facility.

The new plant, with an annual production capacity of 2.5lakh units, is in line with the company’s expansion plans to meet with the growing local demand. With the new plant, the total output from Maruti Suzuki will stand at 1.75 million units annually.

Addressing the company shareholders at the annual general meeting, Osamu Suzuki, chairman, Suzuki Motor Corp said, “We had not estimated the pace at which car demand would grow in India.”

Suzuki’s second plant in Manesar will be operational by 2012, followed by the third plant slated to go online in 2013. Suzuki’s first plant in Manesar was launched back in 2007 with an annual capacity of 3lakh units. The company is plans to manufacture the WagonR and the Alto at its newest Manesar plant.

For the month of August 2010, Maruti witnessed strong sales, recording highest every monthly sale figures.  The company managed to sell 104,791 vehicles in the said month as compared to 84,808 units in August 2009, a growth of over 23.6 percent.
