The Isuzu D-Max pickup truck has received a new all-electric version with full-time four-wheel drive and a payload of over a tonne. It's all but identical to the diesel-powered D-Max, and even retains the ladder-frame chassis – it swaps out the oil-burner with a pair of electric motors and a battery.

  2. Has a ground clearance of 210mm, water wading depth of 600mm

Gets up to 262km of driving range

The Isuzu D-Max EV uses a pair of electric motors – one on each axle – giving a combined output of 190hp and 325Nm of torque. Isuzu claims a 0-100kph time of 10.1 seconds and a top speed north of 125kph.

Powering the motors is a 66.9kWh battery pack that sits under the floor. It has a WLTP-certified range of 262km and can be charged at speeds of up to 50kW for a 20-80 percent top-up time of one hour. However, the claimed range figure is pretty low by modern EV standards.

Retains impressive off-road ability

Isuzu says the battery doesn't have a drastic impact on the D-Max's off-road ability, with the EV boasting 210mm of ground clearance and a wading depth of 600mm. It has approach and departure angles of 30.5 degree and 24.2 degree, respectively.

In addition to permanent four-wheel drive, the D-Max EV has a dedicated Rough Terrain Mode for "extreme off-road capability". While it uses the same ladder chassis as the regular D-Max, Isuzu has fitted a bespoke De Dion rear suspension system in place of the leaf springs for improved handling.

The EV is rated to carry more than 1,000kg in its load bed and can tow up to 3,500kg – although Isuzu has yet to say what impact this will have on the range. The D-Max EV has a kerb weight of 2,350kg.

Isuzu D-Max EV exterior and interior

Is identical to the regular D-Max inside and outside

Do note that this new electric pickup is based on the facelifted model that came out internationally in 2024, and not the version on sale in India. Likewise, the D-Max EV is largely identical to the diesel-powered D-Max, inside and out – down to the equipment list, which includes a touchscreen infotainment screen with smartphone mirroring, a digital driver's display, dual-zone climate control, front and rear parking sensors and heated front seats. The D-Max EV is being offered only in double-cab form for now.
