Hyundai has announced that its premium i20 compact hatchback has achieved a million units in global sales. This figure includes the sales of the old i20, Elite i20 and the i20 Active crossover hatchback.

Hyundai launched the original i20 in India back in 2008 following which it gave the model a facelift in 2012. In 2014, Hyundai launched the new Elite i20 with the model drawing a strong response from the public. The car recorded bookings of over 56,000 units within its first four months of launch, with sales crossing the 1-lakh mark within a year. In 2015, the i20 was joined by a crossover derivative in the form of the i20 Active. Hyundai also exports the India-made i20 to international markets.

Commenting on the milestone, Y K Koo, managing director and CEO, Hyundai Motor India, said, “Reaching this historic mark is a testament to the Hyundai i20’s staying power and the global appeal of a vehicle that delivers sporty design, functionality and class-leading performance. We are extremely delighted that i20 models have achieved this milestone of one million global sales and met the aspirations of Indian and global customers.”

Since its launch, the i20 has regularly been in the top 10 of the sales chart every month. The car contends with the likes of the Honda Jazz and Maruti Baleno in the Indian market.
