After much anticipation, an official announcement has been made regarding GM India and REVA entering into a collaboration agreement to develop electric vehicles for the Indian market.

With General Motors’ ability to develop required platforms and REVA’s expertise in manufacturing electric drive-trains and control systems, the collaboration will result in consumers having a wider choice of EVs.

Both the parties are planning to work closely with the Central and State Governments in India to develop the required infrastructure for electric vehicle charging and providing financial benefits to those opting for the environment-friendly vehicles.

Speaking on the occasion, Karl Slym, President and MD, GM India said, “We are pleased to join hands with REVA to bring affordable small car platform based electric vehicles to the market in line with government objectives to reduce fossil fuel dependence."

There is an upsurge in the development of small electric vehicles around the global automotive industry and this collaboration may symbolize a global trend for partnerships that can result in far reaching changes in the industry.

Both the companies have already begun their feasibility studies of GM’s platforms to host the electric technology and further announcements regarding the vehicles are awaited.
