Last week, camouflaged images of the upcoming Jawa 300 had emerged online, and now we get a glimpse of the production-spec motorcycle.
And can be seen in the spy picture, the new Jawa takes many design cues from the older bike and that should please the brand’s loyalists. The distinctive headlight profile, dual-tone chrome finish on the fuel tank, flat saddle, period-specific telescopic fork, twin peashooter pipes and the flared mudguards with pinstripes are reminiscent of the Jawa 250 Type A (original name Type 353/04), which was the first Jawa offering to go on sale in India. The spied bike gets draped in the iconic maroon shade that Jawas are associated with. From this angle, the design details that we can tell have been changed are the tail-light and the placement of the ignition switch. The overall stance of the new Jawa looks highly similar to the original motorcycle and that should appeal to buyers looking for retro-styled machines.
Powering the new Jawa will be a 293cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled motor that features dual overhead camshafts and produces 27hp and 28Nm of peak torque. Transmission duties are handled by a 6-speed gearbox. According to the company, the new engine has been developed from scratch and we believe it shares only the very basic architecture with the Mojo’s existing 300cc mill, and it will be BS-VI ready as well.
Also seen in the image, the frame and swingarm are different from the ones seen on the Mojo. It features telescopic fork up front and twin shock absorbers at the back, with a gas -charged canister at the bottom adding to the retro look. For braking, the upcoming Jawa motorcycle employs a single disc brake (smaller than that of the Mojo) at the front and a drum brake at the rear; this confirms that the bike will have a single-channel ABS unit.
The new Jawa will make its debut on November 15 in Mumbai and compete against the Royal Enfield Classic 350, and given the use of simple components, we expect it to be priced on par with Royal Enfield’s most popular motorcycle or maybe even undercut it.
