The BMW M 1000 R with the M Competition Package is the base for the M 1000 RS

At the heart of the new M 1000 RS is the familiar 999cc inline-four engine that also powers the M 1000 R and M 1000 RR. However, it produces peak figures of 218hp at 14,500rpm and 113Nm at 11,000rpm. For reference, the standard M 1000 R makes 205hp at 13,000rpm and 112.5Nm at 11,100rpm. BMW claims a 0-100kph time of 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 283kph. The M full-titanium exhaust system is standard.

Suspension comprises fully adjustable, electronically controlled units at both ends, with a 45mm USD fork at the front and a monoshock at the rear. The front brakes comprise 320mm discs with four-piston radial calipers, while the rear gets a 220mm disc with a single-piston floating caliper.

BMW has also tweaked the ergonomics. While the foot pegs have been carried over from the M 1000 RR, the seat is 20mm higher than that on the standard M 1000 R, which has an 850mm seat height. BMW says this results in a more front-wheel-oriented riding position.

Standard electronics include multiple riding modes, adjustable traction control, cruise control, keyless ignition and a TPMS. The 6.5-inch TFT display also gets a dedicated M start-up animation. Optional extras include a low windscreen, handlebar risers and different seat options. Buyers can also opt for M Performance Parts, such as a data logger with a GPS lap trigger and an engine protector.
