2021 BMW S 1000 R price and variants

The latest BS6-compliant big bike to hit the Indian market is the BMW S 1000 R, which has just been launched with prices starting from Rs 17.90 lakh. That’s the price for the Standard variant, while the Pro version costs Rs 19.75 lakh and the range-topping Pro M Sport sits at Rs 22.50 lakh (all prices ex-showroom, India). When the model was previously on sale here in the BS4 era, prices started from Rs 16.45 lakh, so the new bike is around Rs 1.45 lakh dearer.

Its 999cc inline-four-cylinder engine is derived from the S 1000 RR’s motor but misses out on technology like variable valve timing and features a milder state of tune. The end result is a relatively modest 165hp and 114Nm, which is nowhere close to something like the recently launched Ducati Streetfighter V4. But the Beemer isn’t intended to be such a hardcore machine anyway, and instead promises a flatter torque curve and more linear delivery.

Underpinnings are a pretty straightforward affair. Everything is held together by a twin-spar aluminium frame and a bolt-on tubular subframe. Suspension duties on the Standard variant are handled by a 45mm upside-down fork and monoshock, both of which are fully adjustable. The Pro version ups the ante with electronically-adjustable semi-active suspension, while the Pro M Sport goes a step further and throws in carbon wheels. As a result, the standard bike tips the scales at 199kg while the Pro M Sport is 5kg lighter, at 194kg.

2021 BMW S 1000 R design & features

Unlike its asymmetric predecessor, this 2021 S 1000 R features a more conventional look, with a single LED headlight. As with any litre-class naked, the bike looks pretty muscular, but there are no over-the-top elements here. The tank, radiator shrouds and tail section all look handsome. New for 2021 is a 6.5-inch colour TFT display, through which you can control three riding modes, wheelie control, cornering ABS, lean-sensitive traction control and engine brake control.
